Here we are: at the start of May, aka the month of the American Idol finale. Season 13 will draw to a close in just a few weeks and we'll have ourselves a champion. Just a handful of stars remain and it's only getting tougher!

Last night's two-hour show featured songs as picked by us Idol fans and America, we all have really good taste. The Top 5 really hit their respective pitches out of the ballpark last night and while there were a couple of fouls, overall we were mighty pleased with the evening's events.

Being pleased, of course, doesn't mean anyone's safe for sure. Tonight another contestant  was set to go home (we'd already made our pick) and the results left us on our sofa, sobbing into our potato chips and cursing the name Ryan Seacrest. (Full disclosure: That's a pretty typical Thursday night for us when Idol's in season.) Keith Urban's performance was a little ray of Aussie sunshine though, so thanks for that, Keith.

Who headed home at the end of the evening? It wasn't as easy as you'd expect though. The contestants had to choose whether to send home the person with the lowest votes tonight or pass on eliminations this week and send two home next week. They all voted anonymously and it had to be unanimous.

Their choice? Stick with the program and send a fellow contestant home (the vote coming down to three yes votes, and two no votes). And the eliminated contestant as chosen by America: Sam Woolf.

And with that, the Top 4 are:

Are you surprised by the elimination tonight? Saw it coming? What did you think of the surprise twist? Tell us in the comments!
