You ready, world? You're about to meet your American Idol 2014 Season 13 winner. In a week's time we'll know who to call the champion. The Top 2 will compete on Tuesday, May 20, and Ryan Seacrest will read us America's verdict the very next evening, Wednesday, May 21, in a two-hour grand finale.

All that pomp and circumstance in mind makes tonight's elimination the toughest of the season. Of course, that isn't to say they haven't all been hard, but getting rid of someone from the Top 3 is like fumbling the football just shy of a touchdown. They're almost, almost, almost there. To make anyone leave now just feels cruel.

But the music industry's no laughing matter — it's tough out there! (As if Harry Connick, Jr.'s real talk didn't already prove that this year.) So, who went home tonight?

After much anticipation and more than one well-timed cliffhanger from Ryan, America's votes were revealed. Unfortunately, Alex Preston is headed home, while Jena Irena and Caleb Johnson will be continuing on to the final round.

We can't say we didn't see it coming but that doesn't make the goodbye any easier. The one upside to this whole thing? Getting this far in the competition means all three contestants have had crazy amounts of exposure and, as Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and others before them have proved, you don't have to winAmerican Idol to be an American Idol. (It doesn't hurt that Alex will also get to perform with his own idol Jason Mraz on next week's show!)

Best of luck to Alex with whatever's ahead. We know this isn't the last we'll be hearing from him!
