Sigh. It pains us to have to tell you this, but we were totally right about who would leave American Idol this week when the Top 3 became a Top 2. And we hate it when we’re right.

Last night, Alex Preston graced the Idol stage for his last time as a contestant in the running to take home the big prize, and although we predicted it, it doesn’t mean we’re happy about it. And neither was Harry Connick, Jr., who looked more heartbroken over Alex’s departure than any other person on the stage last night.

Alex had an amazing run on Idol and ended on a high note — his version of “Stay” by Rihanna was a truly innovative take on a Top 40 song — but unfortunately, Top 2 was just not in the cards. We’ve known practically since day one that the competition would come down to Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson, but if the decision was ours, we’d see Jena and Alex duke it out on next week’s finale.

The bright side: Not only has Alex gained tons of exposure during his time on Idol, but he’ll be back to perform again next week with his idol, Jason Mraz. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Do you agree that Alex should have left, or do you think it should’ve been Jena or Caleb to go home?
