American Idol alum Ace Young invoked a nationwide swoon after he proposed to former contestant Diana DeGarmo during the show’s season finale last night.

So how did he go from merely thinking about marriage to proposing while millions of people watched on?  

"I called [producer] Nigel [Lythgoe] directly last week and said, 'I want to do this. I'm going to do this. Is there any way I could do it at the show?'" Young told People at the American Idol finale post party. "He said 'Yes, I'm not going to tell anybody until the day of … I want you to figure it out with Ryan [Seacrest]."

Ace had every last detail planned out but that didn’t stop Diana, who appeared on Season 3 of Idol, from nearly thwarting his plan!

“I actually almost got up to go to the bathroom to fix my hair,” Diana told People. “And then I just started shaking [on stage].”

Congrats to the happy couple on one more successful reality TV romance!
