The American Idol judges have consistently given strong praise to 18-year-old Amber Holcomb throughout the competition so far. On American Idol last night, Mariah Carey said Amber’s performance was a “tour de force” and Randy Jackson said she had the best vocals of the night!
In a press interview after the American Idol performances last night, Amber talked about how hard it was being in the bottom three in the American Idol results last time, and how she came back to “kill it” for ‘Motown’ week.
Q: Your pink lipstick wasn't pink enough for Nicki!
AH: I think she just wants me to wear her color – her lipstick.
Q: Only standing ovation of the night!
AH: Oh my gosh I know, that is crazy! Everybody wants a standing ovation. I'm not going to say I didn't expect it because everybody wants one.
Q: You did seem a little visibly rattled at the beginning of your performance. Was that because of your video package?
AH: It was probably my heart me because at the beginning of every performance I feel like I can feel my heart in my throat. I don't know if y'all can hear it but once I messed up I'm like, "Okay get it together."
Q: How was meeting Smokey Robinson. He was a fan!
AH: That was crazy. He's a legend. Right when I met him he told me he was a fan of mine and I was like, "dang." I called my mom and I told her I met him and she was like "get his autograph! I was scared. I'm not going to lie at first I was really scared.
Q: What was it like being in the bottom 3 last week?
AH: Whew. The first day I was really depressed. After that whole show I was depressed. I didn't want to smile for no pictures. I was sad but as the days went on I got better. I started feeling better and I was like "Okay, this week you need to do what you do best."
Q: The audience cheers for their favorites and it seems to change every week.
AH: We come on stage and you hear people cheer. And you're like "not for me? Okay." Everybody does have their favorites.
Q: You got great feedback on the group song too.
AH: I didn't know they were going to judge us on the group song but I love that song so when I found out we were doing it I was happy. The dancing? I don't know so much. It was fun. I'm kind of glad we had the group before because if I had messed up the group I would have been able to come back and kill it on my solo.
AH: What about the bad feedback the guys got for their group performance tonight?
A: I don't want to talk about it. (Laughs) I'm just playing. Everybody was in the same situation. We all had to learn the song and we all had the same amount of time so I feel like its each individual and they did what they did.
Q: What was the energy backstage like tonight? The judges were harsher than usual.
AH: I feel like everybody did a great job so when they would come off stage we would just cheer. We always sit on the couch and they come in the room we cheer and clap for them so aside from the feedback we just look at the overall performance so I feel like everybody did a good job so I said "good job."
Q: So do you feel confident you'll be in the top 3 tomorrow?
AH:I always expect the worse so anything about is good. So I'm not going to be all "woo, top 3" and then tomorrow I'm fourth. So I mean whatever happens is going to happen.
Q: What is your favorite Idol performance ever?
AH: When Joshua Ledet sang "When a Man Loves a Woman" when he sang that high note on that bridge I melted through the TV. That was the best I've seen. That was amazing.
