As he continues his post-Idol press tour, former Season 11 contestant Colton Dixon is speaking out about the show that made him famous.

In an interview with TVLine, Colton remarked to host Michael Slezak that Idol felt less like a competition and more like a TV show at times. He pointed at the show’s attempts to thicken the plot line between contestants, like the “romance” between him and Skylar Laine, and mentor Jimmy Iovine’s constant comparisons of Colton to fellow lady killer Phillip Phillips.

But like any reality competition show, there are strategies for succeeding. Michael commended Colton on his sweeping performances and bold song choices, which made him a distinctive contestant throughout his run on the show. In response, Colton explained that his ability to rework and adapt songs to fit his style was definitely one of his strong suits.

“There are several contestants still left that can outsing me, you know, hands down,” said Colton. “I have an okay voice... American Idol is more about the whole package than just the best singer, I believe.”
