By the time you’re reading this recap, our Top 2 will have been chosen, and we’ll be less than a week away from crowning the 2012 American Idol. Can you believe it? We can’t. But whether we’re ready or not, this is happening, so let’s see how things shake out.

The evening begins with a Beatles song from the Top 3, all of them looking pretty sharp in black-and-white outfits. It’s cheesy, but not bad. Phillip Phillips is missing from the Ford commercial for the second week in a row. Hmm.

Joshua Ledet is the first contestant called to center stage. Jimmy Iovine says the judges were too generous on “I’d Rather Go Blind,” “Imagine” was overblown and over-emotional, and “No More Drama” ended up being a bad choice because it didn’t have enough melody. Jimmy takes full responsibility for the bad song pick, but, well... let’s hope it didn’t hurt Joshua in the voting, hmm?

After a silly product placement segment for the new Ice Age movie, it’s time for a guest performance from Lisa Marie Presley, singing her new single, “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” There’s a lot of fog and a bunch of mossy trees behind her, and the whole effect is very witch-y. Also super boring. It’d be better if she was really a witch, probably. Or if this was Hocus Pocus, also known as the Best Movie Ever.

Jessica Sanchez is next in the hot seat. Jimmy says “My All” wasn’t enough of a shock-and-awe moment, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” wasn’t either, and guess what? He didn’t think his song choice for Jessica was so great, either! Oops. Isn’t it, like, Jimmy’s job to know what songs would be good for artists? Duh.

Adam Lambert! He looks like a blacklight poster at the beginning; the stage is dark, but his shirt and nail polish are glowing neon yellow and it’s awesome. We like his new song, “Never Close Our Eyes,” too — it’s a pretty rocking dance song, and Adam’s in fine form tonight. This is 10,000 times more entertaining than Lisa Marie was.

Time for Phillip Phillips to take center stage. Jimmy says “Beggin'” was entertaining and fun, but “Disease” was a total snoozefest. Luckily, Jimmy liked his own song pick for Phillip, calling his performance “flawless.” We’re pretty sure that Phillip is Jimmy’s favorite.

This is wild — they’re going to announce the Top 2 any minute now, and we still don’t know who it’s going to be! We’ll make a last-minute prediction that Jessica’s going to be cut, but it really could go any way. Anything could happen. Nobody is safe!

We need a drink.

After the final commercial break, it’s time to find out the results. The first person in the Top 2 is... Jessica! Well, so much for our last-minute speculation. The second person is... Phillip! Which means Joshua is going home. Which is both sad and not terribly surprising. Phillip is everything that Idol audiences love, and Jessica is a very talented young lady. Joshua proceeds to blow the roof off the place with a reprise of “Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and just like that... we’re down to two.

Next week — the finale! Can Jessica manage to overcome the unstoppable force that is Phillip Phillips? We’re not sure, but we’re looking forward to seeing her try! Don’t forget, Idol is on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, so clear your schedule!
