Last night, 58 million votes were cast for our Top 6, which Ryan Seacrest says was 10 million more votes than last year’s Top 6 got. Sucks to be Season 10, we guess!
Since we got our group performance last night, tonight the show kicks off with a performance by The Queen Extravaganza, a tribute band with a singer who does a much better Freddie Mercury than any of the Top 6. Apparently these guys were hand-picked by the surviving members of Queen and will be touring this summer, if you’re into that.
Next up: Dumb Ford commercial. Dumb tie-in visit to TMZ. Ugh, Harvey Levin and his minions are just such creeeeeeeps. Also, stop trying to make Skylar/Colton (Skyton? Collar?) happen. It’s not going to happen.
The Idols will be getting their results in pairs tonight, starting off with Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone. Gosh, we can’t possibly guess which of these ladies is in the Bottom 3. Jimmy Iovine says: Jessica’s performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a mistake but her performance of “Dance with my Father” was magnificent, and that Elise made two terrible song choices and should just give up, basically. Elise hates her life right now, and is — unsurprisingly — sent to the Stools of Shame.
Stefano Langone is in the house! When Stefano got eliminated last season, he was very eager to show the world his amazing talent and impress us all with his music, so we’re expecting to be wowed. And... huh. We are, a little, in a very specific way. His song is super cheesy, but it’s also really fun and catchy, and the performance is very well-executed. It’s sort of like the High School Musical of club jams, and whatever, we kind of rocked out.
Next up for results are BFFs Hollie Cavanagh and Joshua Ledet. Jimmy says: Hollie’s Queen performance was just okay but “The Climb” was a really great choice for her, and if Joshua gets voted off tonight, there will be armageddon (we’re paraphrasing). Hollie’s in the Bottom 3, which is probably fair. She definitely belongs there over Joshua, anyway.
Then it’s Katy Perry’s turn to take the stage. She has purple hair and tiny camouflage shorts. This song, “Part of Me,” was written a couple of years ago but totally seems like it could be about her failed marriage to Russell Brand, so even though we know it’s not, we spend the entire performance being sad on her behalf. Oops. Other than our weird emotional reaction (we thought they were a cute couple, okay), it’s an enjoyable performance, with a lot of cool stage effects and dancing.
Our last duo to get results are Phillip Phillips and Skylar. This could be interesting — Skylar probably should be safe, but so far Phillip’s cute butt has yet to hit the Stools of Shame. Jimmy says: Skylar’s Queen performance was competent but her second performance was self-indulgent, and Phillip may have left an opening for someone else to overtake him in the competition. Hmm. And the person in the Bottom 3 is... Skylar! Phillip’s totally winning this thing, y’all.
Skylar only stays in the Bottom 3 for a minute before Ryan sends her back, leaving Elise and Hollie on the chopping block. And after a commercial break, it turns out that the person leaving tonight is... Elise Testone. Not at all surprising, and probably not undeserved, but still a shame. She’ll probably be really awesome on the Idol summer tour, at least, because her singout of “Whole Lotta Lovin’” is pretty rockin’.
And then there were five.
So what did you think about tonight’s results? Did America get it right? And do you agree with us that Phillip is pretty much unbeatable?
