The Top 7 is now the Top 6. Jessica Sanchez’s save last week left us wondering even harder who would be leaving American Idol next. If a fan and judges’ favorite could end up getting eliminated, who’d be next?

When it came down to it, the finalists with the fewest votes were Elise Testone, Hollie Cavanagh (both no strangers to the Stools of Shame), and Colton Dixon, who had never before been in the Bottom 3. Sadly, it wound up being his first and only time. The stylish and opinionated rocker was axed based on yesterday’s nationwide vote.

Even before the results, judge Randy Jackson noted of his performances last night, “I don’t think it was one of Colton’s better nights.” Indeed, we thought he did a pretty good job of rocking the socks off of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” but his version of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” was a misfire.

After learning of his elimination, Colton immediately apologized to the judges and his fans, saying, “I wasn’t myself last night.” He also acknowledge judge Jennifer Lopez’s criticisms from last night and said he’d take them to heart when he made his first record. “You’ll make many records,” Jennifer said with confidence. Randy chimed in assuredly and said, “You have a huge career ahead of you.” The Murfreeboro, Tenessee native closed out the evening on a high note, singing Lifehouse’s “Everything” as the rest of the finalists stood by for support.

We’ll sincerely miss Colton’s soaring vocals and edgy style. No one else can pull of a colorful faux hawk quite like him!
