Somehow, Season 11 contestant Phillip Phillips has no idea how good he is. When Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the charming 20-year-old Georgia boy on the red carpet recently, he admitted that he didn’t even “expect to make it” onto American Idol. (Say what?) Now that he has, his plan is to just do his thing.

Amazingly, Phillip has managed to stay grounded and avoid getting caught up in the hype and pressure of the show. “I’m just another musician trying to make it,” he shared. “I just want the music to speak to everyone.”

And as much as he hopes that his music is well-liked, Phillip doesn’t worry about his image. As far as he’s concerned, the music is what’s important, so when he’s onstage, he’s not thinking about how he looks. “I'm so nervous up there, I don't know what to do and I'm just into the music,” he revealed.

For Phillip, another part of being himself is playing his guitar. Even though he says he’s been called “a copier of Dave [Matthews]” because of how he plays it and accused of hiding behind it, he’s going to keep it around. “They’ve said that about so many other artists,” he reasoned. “But your instrument is you... There’s no hiding behind anything.”

Go for it, Phillip! We like the guitar and we love him. Besides, he just qualified for the Final 9, so clearly his strategy (or lack thereof) seems to be working!
