American Idol 2013 is not Top 10 finalist Candice Glover’s first ride on the merry-go-round. She auditioned previously for Season 9 and Season 11, but failed to make the Top 20 either time.
Some people would have given up after being cut twice, but Candice came back for yet another try for Season 12. Why did she do it? Well, the 23-year-old South Carolina native tells Wetpaint in an exclusive interview that she feels like God basically gave her no choice but to audition again this year.
It's insane to me that you've been here twice. I can't believe with your voice, I haven't seen you on this blue carpet the last year and the year before?
Right. I was here season nine and made top 70. Then last year, made top 60, and now I'm standing here top ten.
Why do you feel this was the right year?
I felt like this was the year that I didn't have a choice. I had to bring it this year. And everything that I'm showing on stage is everything that I've always had, but I just never had the confidence to show it.
So in the past it was sort of like, “I can always come back”?
When I got cut last year, I was like, you know what? There's obviously something that's not working. So I'm not going back, but just to see the feedback that I got from the fans online and people from Indonesia and the Philippines and Brazil, all of them love you and this year when the auditions came back, I feel like God put that audition in Charlotte, North Carolina because it's like, right there. I didn't have a choice but to go and audition.
So what can we expect going forward?
I've always been the type of girl to do stuff that nobody really expects me to do. With John Legend, that was a song that was totally unexpected, and I want to keep that surprise thing going. And I want everybody to be on their toes.
Who are the artists that have influenced you?
Jazmine Sullivan, Christina Aguilera, I remember being like eight or nine and seeing her on TV and wanting to be her. I wanted to be in her videos. I wanted to dance like her. Kimbra, I think she's from New Zealand, and I think her creativity has really inspired me to do those jazzy things with those songs, and Lianne La Havas, Kim Burrell and Brandy and all of those different people, and I'm pretty sure that all of them have had doors slammed in their faces. So that just inspires me even more.
So now that you're going to sing covers and there are theme nights, how do you see yourself within other people's songs?
With every single theme that I'm given, I always want to have something in that song that's me. Like tonight, I did Mary J. Blige. And I didn't change too much, but I still put my Candy thing on it. Like I still did my thing with it, and I want to do that for the rest of the season. I always want people to know, that's Candice.
