The American Idol 2013 auditions continue tonight from down South in Baton Rouge, LA! The newest batch of hopeful contestants are going to have to be truly spectacular to compete with some of the amazing performances we’ve already seen in New York, Chicago and Charlotte. Last night’s American Idol 2013 auditions from Charlotte, NC were especially fabulous. Judge Randy Jackson even said at the end of the night, he could potentially see several of them making it all the way to the top 10 and beyond!
From Charlotte, 37 young ladies and gentlemen were given golden tickets and sent off to prepare for American Idol 2013 Hollywood Week. Some of the audition performances last night are being hailed by fans as the best of the season so far. Returning hopeful Candice Glover, who was cut in the Vegas round in Season 11, was hailed by all the judges as the most impressive performance yet in American Idol Season 12. She was barely able to see through tears of joy as she exited with her golden ticket clutched tightly in hand!
Country singer Brian Rittenberry, quirky sweetheart Seretha Guinn (who sang “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”), and possible next Carrie Underwood in-the-making Janelle Arthur were also strong standouts to make at least the Top 40. (And if you absolutely must know if they did, you can check out our American Idol 2013 Top 40 spoilers!)
Hopefully, the singers who waited in line for endless hours to audition in Baton Rouge will be so amazing, they’ll blow those hacks in Charlotte right out of the water, right? Let’s see if Louisiana talent can make those East Coast performers look like karaoke singers! Okay, I admit it, I’m a deep South girl and I can’t help but cheer on the American Idol 2013 contestants from my neck of the woods!
Wonder why judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson are searching for singers in Baton Rouge? Well, it just so happens to be Randy's hometown! So he's probably going to be either extra loving or extra critical of the singers on the show tonight.

Judge Randy Jackson says it is good to be in his hometown of Baton Rouge tonight! Keith Urban (perhaps rightfully) declares that “all the good music is from the South!” As a Southerner, I can’t really disagree on that.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Megan Miller
The first audition of the evening goes to 22-year-old Miss Greater Baton Rouge Megan Miller. She recently had an accident and is supposed to be undergoing surgery for a nasty infection in her leg. Megan, however, doesn’t bloody well give a dang if they have to amputate, she is NOT going to miss her American Idol audition! For her performance, she gives the judges a pretty decent rendition of “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida. She doesn’t really sound like superstar material, but she’s not bad.
Mariah Carey thinks Megan is sweet. Keith Urban makes a lame joke about how Megan should have moved around more (she’s on crutches). Keith really has a terrible sense of humor. I mean really, joking that he thought Megan would perform “Lean On Me” for her audition? Ouch! All the judges are in with a yes vote, including Keith -- although he does have to turn down Megan’s rather weird invitation to attend her surgery. Want to know how far Megan Miller has gone in the competition so far? Find out in our American Idol spoilers for Megan here!
American Idol 2013 Audition: Charlie Askew
On seeing Charlie Askew, you just kind of think this is not one of those auditions that is going to go well. He’s weird, he looks like an oddball, and his mother says he has “Charlie Askew Syndrome,” which basically means -- we just can’t explain why he’s this way. Surprisingly, Charlie turns out to not be a bad audition after all, he’s quite good! He performs “Breakthrough” by Queen and although he needs work, he’s got a clear, natural talent. To please the judges, he follows up with “Nature Boy” by Nat King Cole. Randy thinks Charlie is totally “cool” and the other judges agree. Charlie says he just can’t be anyone but who he is. I think he’s sweet and you just want him to have the experience of going to Hollywood even if he never makes it to the finals. The judges seem to agree and he’s got a golden ticket to ride! Can't wait to know if Charlie made it to the Top 40? We have the spoilers on how he's doing so far right here!

American Idol 2013 Audition: Maddie Assell
Maddie Assell, 17, is the next one up to go in front of the judges. She was nominated for Idol by her grandmother. Randy Jackson sneaks up on her while she is doing a street performance with a brass band. She is shocked and overcome by finding out she will get to audition and actual cries. It’s really very sweet.
Telling her story to the judges, Maddie says she is influenced by Adele and, interestingly, Haley Reinhart. She has a beautiful voice I’m looking forward to hopefully hearing quite a bit more of. Keith Urban is happy that although she has been influenced by many, she doesn’t sound like anyone but herself. If you care to find out if Maddie was unique enough to get all the way to the Top 40, click here for the answer!
After a commercial break, Idol starts up again to the background music of “Bad Things” by Jace Everett. Ryan Seacrest says, appropriately, that “everything is beginning to suck” in Baton Rouge. That’s the cue, of course, for a montage of horrible auditions. Thankfully, it’s a one hour show tonight, so it’s a brief trip and over quickly. Everything is beginning to suck.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Paul Jolley
Bring on the country boys! Paul Jolley sings “I Won’t Let Go” by Rascall Flats and it’s an instant hit with the judges. Lusty Nicki Minaj is absolutely in love with this cutie and his deliciously sweet tone. You can just tell by that little smile on her face she’d love the audition even more only if he did it shirtless. Mariah is also loving it. She thinks it was “effortless” and “people are going to love you.” Keith Urban and Randy Jackson are on board as well and it is four yes votes for Hollywood. Paul is just about ready to cry talking about how his dear departed grandfather, who died recently, would be smiling down on him right now. We can tell you how far Paul Jolley has made it so far in the competition if you like. Just check out the spoilers!
American Idol 2013 Audition: Chris Barthel
Chris Barthel says he wants a Nicki Minaj nickname and she decides to tag him with the moniker, Mushroom. Unfortunately for Chris, a NickiName is the only thing he walks away with this evening as the judges unanimously agree he’s not Idol material.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Dr. Calvin Harris
Mariah Carey can’t help herself from saying Dr. Calvin Harris is “very handsome.” Nicki Minaj thinks he did a lot of things with his voice people “don’t normally attempt to do in an audition.” All four judges shower Dr. Calvin with yes votes! He’s so thrilled he can’t contain himself and says his fellow doctors are going to think this is “so SICK!” Have the hots for the sexy Dr. Calvin? You can get the dish on if he made it to the Top 40 here!
Saving time in a short show tonight, the next three auditions are combined in one quick montage. Michelle Montezeri, 19, Breanna Steer, 18, and (another country singer) Brandy Hotard, 26, are all through to Hollywood Week.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Dustin Watts
Naturally, the first thing Nicki Minaj asks of the cute fireman is whether or not he has a girlfriend. He performs Garth Brooks’ “She’s Every Woman” -- yes, another country performer this season -- and Nicki is even more in love. She thinks he is a country star in the making. Plus, she doesn’t even have to give him a nickname since he comes with one: Fireman. The judges all agree, he’s going to Hollywood. Dustin takes his golden ticket back to his firehouse to share with the guys, grinning all the way. For fans of this country cutie, we have the spoilers on how far Dustin has made it in the competition so far. If you want to know, click here!
American Idol 2013 Audition: Burnell Taylor
Burnell is a Louisiana local originally from New Orleans. He says his grandfather got him into singing, and his mother says he’s sang since he was little. He was a witness to the destruction of Hurrican Katrina and his family lost everything. Afterward, Burnell’s family moved to Baton Rouge and he said the experience was an eye-opener that made him appreciate life and go after his dreams. He sings “I’m Here” from The Color Purple. When he starts singing, the judges start giving him all kinds of “yeah” and “mmmhmmm” and when he’s done, they rise for a standing ovation. One look Keith Urban gives him looks like someone just held up a box full of the most adorable puppies in the world. Keith says he has an absolutely “killer voice” and, as you can probably guess, it is a unanimous yes vote. Burnell’s mom is in tears and Ryan Seacrest says Burnell has “changed that panel forever.” Okay, Burnell has a sad story... and a nice voice... but was he really that moving? Well, we’ll let you be the judge. Curious to discover whether or not Burnell Taylor makes it to the Top 40? We have the answer in our spoilers here!
Thirty-five contestants move on from Baton Rouge to Hollywood Week tonight. Keith Urban says the amount of great singers from
To wrap up for the evening, we have Keith Urban accidentally looking at Nicki Minaj and calling her Mariah. When he realizes his oops, he says he should probably say some Hail Marys for that one. Mariah gives him an ‘Mmmhmmm’ and a snarky comment letting him know that calling Nicki by her name is soooo not okay.
And that’s a wrap for tonight! Join us again next week for more live coverage of American Idol 2013. Meanwhile, catch up on all the latest news, gossip and more for Season 12 here!
