Are you ready to find out who was eliminated on American Idol tonight and who the last five girls going to the Season 12 Top 20 are? Is the answer yes? Are you excited? We are! Join us for our live American Idol recap of the sudden death rounds part 3 from Las Vegas’ Mirage Hotel & Casino!
The girls have been absolutely killing it so far on American Idol Season 12. Seriously, they are laying most of the guys to waste. Seeing all of this amazing female talent all over the place this year, it is hard not to think maybe the Idol producers might be really, really wanting a girl to win this year.
Of course, we don’t believe American Idol 2013 would deliberately stack the deck to make sure they end up with (hopefully) another Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Right? Um, we’ll just refrain from commenting on any such wild conspiracy theories!
Whether you are hoping for a guy or a girl to be the next American Idol winner, tonight’s episode should be a blast with the fabulous talent lined up to perform in Las Vegas round 3. If you want to skip ahead to see who went home on American Idol from the ladies tonight, you can check out our spoilers here.
Otherwise, our live American Idol 2013 recap of Wednesday night’s show starts right now!

American Idol 2013: Melinda Ademi Top 40 Performance - “Nobody’s Perfect” by Jessie J
Melinda gives a good, but not exactly spectacular performance, and the judges seem pleased but not overwhelmed. She starts off weak and kind of wanders a bit with her vocals throughout the song, but she does seem to be in it. Her nerves are obviously apparent, however.
Keith notes her nervousness, but says he loves her potential. Nicki says she doesn’t think Melinda really connected with the song. Randy says he didn’t hear any big moments in the song and thinks she could be in trouble. Mariah thinks the nerves just took over.
American Idol 2013: Candice Glover Top 40 Performance - (You Make Me Feel Like) A “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin
Once again Candice Glover proves she is a force to be reckoned with. The song she chose may be old-fashioned, but she has plenty of modern diva style on stage. The audience is on their feet after this performance and roaring so loud the judges can barely be heard.
Keith Urban says it was beautiful and “if song choice is an important thing, that was a great song choice.” He offers up his own tune to Candice, “You’re a natural singer....” Nicki Minaj doesn’t get how she was cut last season and her “confidence is worth a billion words.” Randy Jackson says he thinks Candice has really grown since last year. He thinks it was not the best performance she’s given though. Mariah asks if Candice enjoyed it and says it was “very nice.”
American Idol 2013: Juliana Chahayed Top 40 Performance - “Skyscraper” by Demi Lovato
Juliana is so breathy it is hard to really catch everything she is singing at first and her guitar is distracting. Her tone is very pretty, but I just keep hearing her breathing more than the notes in places. She’s pitchy and lacks power. The judges are really not impressed, but the poor girl is just 15. Keith says he loves the purity of her voice and Nicki says she has a signature sound. She also notes, however, that’s she’s very timid and her voice isn’t very big. Mariah thinks she is “celestial” with her breathy voice and loved her vulnerability.
American Idol 2013: Jett Hermano Top 40 Performance - “Only Girl (In the World) by Rihanna
We are actually kind of loving this performance and think she deserves a shot to go to the Top 20. The song arrangement is great, we love the piano, and Jett has her own unique sound (even if she does kind of remind us of Jessica Sanchez). Keith says he loves the arrangement and the sexy in the song. Nicki wasn’t quite feeling the “sex” so much as she thought the performance lacked a “climax.” Randy thinks she needed a big moment and to get up from the piano. Mariah says she is intriguing and hopes they will see more of her.
American Idol 2013: Cristabel Clack Top 40 Performance - “No One” by Alicia Keys
Cristabel is one of the oldest contestants in Season 12 at 29 years old, but that isn’t holding her back in the least. We really loved her going into the Las Vegas rounds, but she’s just not shining so much tonight. The performance is kind of bland, although Randy Jackson seems really into it. Keith Urban says her voice is “soul croaky cool” and she has a lot of potential. Nicki is not so enthusiastic as Keith or Randy about the performance.
American Idol 2013: Aubrey Cleland Top 40 Performance - “Sweet Dreams” by Beyoncé
Aubrey looks like a superstar when she comes on stage, and sounds (mostly) like one when she starts singing. There are places where she is a bit weak and the high notes are not quite up to Beyoncé standards, but she has the ‘it’ factor quality about her. The judges are all over this performance and totally loving Aubrey. Keith thinks she’s fabulous. Nicki is obsessed, again, for like the millionth time. She talks about how hot she is, and sexy, and gorgeous. Randy says he is obsessed with everything except maybe Ryan Seacrest. He isn’t sure the song was really so perfect for Aubrey, but Nicki and the audience seem to wildly disagree. Mariah thinks Aubrey is “limitless” and it’s obvious she is going to get through.
American Idol 2013: Rachel Hale Top 40 Performance - “Nothing But The Water” by Grace Potter
There is a whole lot of Grace Potter going on in reality TV talent competitions this year. We’ve heard “Stars” more times than we can count, but this is another awesome song. Looks like we may be needing to just start downloading Grace Potter songs. Unfortunately, Rachel isn’t doing great justice to the song. Her voice is just not there. She’s pitchy and off. Keith says he loves the song but it was just too big for her in places. Nicki thinks Rachel came alive on the song, but doesn’t have a lot of high praise for her performance. Mariah thinks she has a great smile but her performance was weak, which is basically the kiss of death.
American Idol 2013: Breanna Steer Top 40 Performance - “Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan
Breanna just became the dark horse who suddenly burst into the spotlight with this performance. She owns the stage and her voice is stellar, even though it has a few tiny wobbles. Keith isn’t familiar with the song but he likes the performance and feels she is believable as a performer. Nicki thinks Breanna and Aubrey need to get together and make a kick-ass girl group. Randy would be happy to sign her for a record deal right now (they always say this, but will they really if the person gets cut?) Mariah is also loving the performance. She’s through to the Top 20, no question.
American Idol 2013: Janelle Arthur Top 40 Performance - “Just a Kiss” by Lady Antabellum
Janelle Arthur is one of our favorites to make it possibly all the way to the finale this season. Which is why it makes us sad that her performance tonight just isn’t as great as we expected. The judges rip it apart maybe more than we think they should, but it is certainly her weakest performance so far. Keith thinks the song was just a bad pick and too limiting for her voice. Nicki thinks the song was not good either and Janelle wasn’t connecting with it. Randy says Janelle is his favorite country singer in the competition right now, but this wasn’t the best showing for her. Mariah thinks Janelle should have done something more pure and simple. That’s okay though, the judges are pretty strongly hinting she’ll be back for another try in the next round.
American Idol 2013: Zoanette Johnson Top 40 Performance - “Circle of Life” from The Lion King
(Video coming soon!)
This is one of the most jaw-dropping performances on American Idol since, well, the last time Zoanette was on stage. What a song choice! What a delivery! Zoanette may not have the most amazing, flawless voice ever, but this girl knows how to rule the stage. Zoanette earns a standing ovation from the judges. Keith Urban says he loves not having any clue what she is going to do next, or that maybe she doesn’t either. He says kudos to the queen of the jungle. Nicki says Zoanette “just served it” and she makes her so emotional that all her siblings in Liberia will get to see her on Idol. She says Zoanette is unforgettable and she loves her.
Now it’s time for the results! Ryan Seacrest announces the five girls who will be making it through to the Top 20 tonight are:
The eliminated contestants are: Cristabel Clark, Melinda Ademi, Juliana Chahayed, Jett Hermano, and Rachel Hale.
