From our American Idol 2013 spoilers so far, we already know who the contestants will be, but for many of them, we still don’t know why they got through when other early favorites did not.
On American Idol tonight, hopefully we’ll discover why some of the most talented singers during the audition rounds don’t make the Top 40. It's the end of the Hollywood Week rounds and tonight the Top 40 for Season 12 will be revealed.
First up tonight is Angela Miller, who gives the American Idol judges one of the absolutely most spectacular performances we've ever seen on the show... seriously! We’re not talking about best Hollywood Week performance, we’re talking best ever. Keith Urban said if he had a recording of that, he’d play it in his car... people are wondering where can they get this song? Nicki Minaj says Angela has totally put herself in the top in their minds with that when she wasn’t before. Nicki says that was a “top 40” song... which is great foreshadowing that Angela is probably headed to the Top 40 contestants going to Vegas Week. We actually think she has the potential to go all the way to the finals and beyond...
Candice Glover comes in front of the judges next and it looks like the girls are indeed “on fire” tonight. Keith Urban says Candice was incredible and says it was very well done. Candice is proving herself a very strong contender to make the Top 10 this season.
Country singer Janelle Arthur continues the streak of great performances. This is her third time on American Idol and she’s hoping this time she will finally make it through to the live rounds. If her performance tonight is any indication, we’re thinking she is right on track to fulfill that dream! Nicki just can’t stop saying her name over and over. She says Janelle is a country superstar in the making. She's one of our early picks to make it all the way to the finale.
After a break, the next performer is Zoanette Johnson, who plans on drumming while she sings. She is quite the character, if you remember her from previous rounds, and she is ready to wow the judges with her mad improvisational song skills and leather bustier. She beats out an original composition all about the judges and gets so into it, she loses one of her drumsticks halfway through. The high note at the end of her performance could break glass.
Nicki Minaj says she is “bowing down at her feet today” and Mariah Carey says no one is going to forget this performance. As crazy as it all was, it was actually pretty spectacular. This lady has moxy!
From the first group of singers, the American Idol 2013 judges put through Jett Hermano (who we didn’t get to see perform), Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover, Zoanette Johnson, and Angela Miller. Kiara Lanier, who we also didn’t get to see in the solo round, is eliminated.
Shubha Vedula gives another sweet, if kind of safe sounding performance, but we didn’t get too see much of it, so perhaps it was better than it seemed on the surface.
Juliana Chahayed tackles Stevie Nicks and, thankfully, does not muck it up like so many previous American Idol contestants have done.
Wild ladies Kez Ban and Zoanette Johnson go shopping for the perfect outfit for Kez to wear for her solo performance. Even with her sexy dress though, Kez Ban is not giving up her fedora. She decides to perform an original for the judges and it is... well, original. Unfortunately it is not good, however, and the judges decide it is time for Kez Ban to go home.
Ashlee Feliciano is the next to take the stage and she has not been feeling well. She says all she can do is try her best and hope it is enough. Sadly, her voice is rough and very pitchy. The look on Mariah Carey’s face says it all. Randy Jackson says it was not a bold song choice and he urges the other contestants waiting to perform need to not be so serious. Music should be fun he says!
Ashlee’s performance is followed by a montage of contestants taking themselves far too seriously and contestants feeding the judges a bunch of downer stories. At one point, Keith faceplants into the judges table.
Melinda Ademi finally breaks the mood with more energetic song and her vocals are spot on. The judges are really liking this girl and it shows in their smiling faces as they praise her performance.
Kree Harrison has failed to impress the judges all that much this season, although they keep passing her through anyway. She talks about losing her both her parents while she was young and how it has affected her. She sings “Stars” for the judges and, while it is another sad story performance, they seem happy enough with this one. Keith says she has fought for her in the competition and this song proved why. Mariah says there is something about her that seems genuine. Nicki says Kree became a star in front of them today.
Kree Harrison, Ashlee Feliciano, Melinda Ademi, and Lauren Minx are through, but Briana Oakley, Sarina-Joi Crowe and Ashley Feliciano are cut. Sarina is heartbroken, sobbing that she has “failed again.”
After the solo eliminations, there are 24 girls left, but only 20 of them will be going through to Vegas Week.
Holly Miller, Lauren Minx, and Ariel Sprague are brought forward and told they will be going home.
There is still one girl left to eliminate, and the judges are pulling out two girls for a sudden death sing off. First up will be Stephanie Schimel, who was loved by Keith in her audition, but not by Nicki. Her performances last night were good, but apparently they were not in love with her solo song tonight. She’s good, but not terrific.
Looks like it is going to be country girl versus country girl as the second contestant for the sing-off tonight will be Rachel Hale. Her performance is more pop this time, but it still doesn’t ‘pop’ that well. Who goes through could go either way.
The judges are ready to make their final decision and the girl who will be going through to the American Idol 2013 Top 40 is... Rachel Hale!
Next up, the judges will be faced with the tough choice of eliminating eight more guys from the remaining male contestants.
From the guys, Nicki Minaj calls forward Adam Sanders, who decides to perform “Taking Chances” by Celine Dion. Adam was a huge hit with the judges at the San Antonio auditions and performed well in the first round during the guys’ Hollywood Week. Unfortunately, his solo song was very weak and barely made it through. Sadly, based on this final chance performance, he will not be moving on from this round to Vegas Week.
Gospel singer Josh Holiday is also called forward to sing again. The judges were inspired by his original audition and they are looking pretty pleased with his final chance song tonight. They tell him they won’t forget his performance... especially considering he split his pants open.
The judges make their final call and ask Peter Garrett, Marin Calderon, Devin Jones, Kenny Harrison, Will White, Tony Foster, David Leathers Jr. and Adam Sanders forward. This is the end of the competition for all of them.
Join us here again next week for the all-important Vegas rounds in front of a live studio audience! The contestants will once again be facing sudden death eliminations and it’s sure to be a drama-filled night of tears and exhilaration!
