Not only do we have the highly entertaining feud between new American Idol 2013 judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey to enjoy, but apparently country star Keith Urban isn’t afraid to speak his mind either! Of course, the catfights and diva behavior won’t just be limited to the celebrity cast this season. Just wait until you see some of the American Idol 2013 auditions on tap for premiere week!
Tonight on the two-hour American Idol season 12 premiere launch, the judges will be travelling to New York City to kick off the audition rounds. Tomorrow night, the auditions will move to the windy city of Chicago, where we promise there will be some truly astonishing hopefuls going before the judging panel.
For those who just can’t wait to find out who made it through the first audition rounds, you can check out a sneak peek of the reported American Idol 2013 Top 40 chosen contestants. Please remember that spoilers are not always totally accurate though, so don’t come chasing after us if an early favorite actually doesn’t make it through after all!
Ready to watch all the insanity of the American Idol 2013 premiere? Here we go!
Kicking off the show tonight, we open with American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips performing an acoustic version of his hit song “Home.” The performance fades into the music video for the song and then switches over to American Idol 2013 host Ryan Seacrest. After he gives some glowing words about how Idol is the end all and be all of reality shows and how Phillip is a mega star, it’s time for the judges to make their appearance.
For season 12, there are three new American Idol 2013 judges for fans to rant at: Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Keith Urban. We start off the evening with a flashy run through of how awesome they all are, along with a grudging nod to returning judge Randy Jackson. Does anyone else still miss the old original crew? What I wouldn't give for a snarky Simon Cowell comment or a Paula Abdul googly-eyed emotional meltdown. Then it’s a high speed video montage of tears, gasps, astonished faces, and enormous crowds waiting to have their dreams gloriously realized, or horribly crushed.
The first victim this evening is a pitiful guy named Mike who tries valiently to sing “We Will Rock You” and fails rather badly. He isn’t one of those scary terrible singers, but certainly not Idol material. He is sent away with a unanimous no, but sweetly tells Mariah Carey he thinks “All I Want For Christmas Is You” absolutely has to be the best modern Christmas song in existence.
Up next is a mini-spat between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey over, of all things, the movie Mean Girls. So, Mariah quoted Mean Girls and Nicki didn’t know where the quote was fun. And they get snarky over this? This is going to be a very interesting season watching these two...
American Idol 2013 Audition: Tenna Torres
Our next possible future Idol star is 28-year-old Tenna Torres. She gushes about attending Camp Mariah when she was young. Looks like she learned something while she was there because she totally blows it out of the water. Her rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carol King is awesome! All of the judges are in full-on love mode. She is going to Hollywood!
American Idol 2013 Audition: James Bae
The judges are next graced with the performance of Asian self-styled rapper, dancer and pop artist James Bae. He was inspired by Justin Bieber to try and make it on Idol, but thinks it would be a miracle if he got through. He is correct, it would take a miracle. His Bieber performance is sad and not even all that entertaining in the pathetic kind of way, but he seems sweet. Nicki says she’ll never forget him though, and even gives him a kiss on the cheek on his way out.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Christina Isabelle
Christina Isabelle, 21, has one of those great Idol sob stories to share. She had weight issues and was bullied in school. So she took charge, lost weight, and went after her dream of being a singer. Christina performs “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess. You can almost see the money signs in the eyes of the judges and she even lands a comparison to Mariah Carey. She receives four yes votes from the judges and is through to Hollywood. She’s going to be one to watch...
American Idol 2013 Audition: Evan Ruggiero
Another 21-year-old contestant, Evan Ruggiero, does not fare quite as well with the judges. He gets a strong ramp up video montage, but in the end it is a lot of hype for nothing. His attempts at “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi both fall flat and he ends up with four no votes. Keith likes him, but doesn’t know if he has the it factor. Mariah thinks he should try it again next year.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Jessica Kartalis
Featured next is one of the little audition twists added this season with 19-year-old hopeful Jessica Kartalis. She did not go to one of the mass cattle calls. Her mom actually nominated her and judge Randy Jackson surprised her with a direct pass to audition for the judges during one of her gigs. Sadly, she does not manage to shine in front of the panel and receives four no votes. Mom is going to feel pretty lousy about putting her daughter through that now...
American Idol 2013 Audition: Shira Gavrielov
Now up we have Shira Gavrielov doing “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. All the judges are into this one, even though it doesn’t seem all that amazing to me. They see something in her though and she’s going through to Hollywood.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Frankie Ford
Now we have a guy, finally, who has some solid pipes to work with. Frankie Ford, 24, gives a slightly off performance of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the Eurythmics. Even though it is wobbly in parts, you can hear the real talent there and the judges are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Mariah says he has an “inner light” and Frankie is indeed going to Hollywood.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Benjamin Gaisley
Auditioner Benjamin Gaisley is a cheeky lad who addresses his performance of “I’ll Make Love to You” directly to Mariah. Oh, and Nicki. He is kind of creepy and it will be hard to get the image of his hip gyrations toward the judges out of my head. Thankfully, even his second try to impress the judges with “Let Me Love You” fails to gain any appreciation from the panel. Randy says his voice is just bad all the way around and he’s sent off to the loser pile.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Rozanna Shindelman
This next audition is just kind of heart-breaking. Rozanna Shindelman has parents that believe in her, but unfortunately the judges don’t. She has never really sung in front of other people before and her voice is, well, not really fit for public consumption. She barely even manages to get much out before the judges shut her down and harshly reject her cries to give it another try. After Rozanna leaves dejected, we are entertained (or distressed) by a montage of other failed auditions.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Sarah Restuccio
One of the youngest hopefuls tonight, 17-year-old Sarah Restuccio, is just that kind of cute, country type you just know is going to get through from the moment she opens her mouth to sing. She also does a pretty rad beat down of “Super Bass” with Nicki Minaj, which leaves Keith Urban wondering exactly what genre she is going to fit into. Why does she have to be stuck under one label? I’d love to see a rapper/country music star. Now that would be different! Even with Keith's very tiny reservation about Sarah, she is through to Hollywood.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Angela Miller
Beautiful Angela Miller is almost an obvious audition winner before she even bothers to sing. Watch enough Idol over the years and you can spot many of the good contestants even without hearing a note. She wows the judges with a gorgeous rendition of “Mamma Knows Best” by Jessie J. The judges think she’s the bomb and Nicki even says it is the best performance of the day. She’s through to the next round with ease.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Brett Holt
Brett Holt is a huge superfan of American Idol and he has actually tried out for the show a ridiculous seven times already. Knowing everything under the sun about the show, however, does not give the talent to actually be on it. He may be the king of Idol trivia, but he plays the fool in front of the judges. His “When I Fall In Love” by Nat King Cole is just atrocious. He will not be moving on, thank goodness.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Gupreet Sing Sarin
Gupreet Sing Sarin prompts the judges into a serious discussion with his “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5. Keith and Nicki are not on board with passing him through. Randy and Mariah, however, like him and want him to move on. Gupreet appeals to Nicki’s love of fashion by comparing a turban he has to her golden hair. Well, that’s one way to sway a vote... he’s through to Hollywood! Here's Gupreet singing Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" to enjoy until we have his audition video for you.
American Idol 2013 Audition: Ashley Feliciano
The last performance of the evening, otherwise known as the ‘pimp’ spot, goes to Ashley Feliciano with “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae. One note in and you know she is going through to Hollywood. Nicki Minaj says she is “so inspired” by her. Mariah says she should be really proud of herself. They have a sappy feel-good moment bringing in her parents with all their adopted and foster children. Four yes votes and the night closes out with another golden ticket to Hollywood.
