A lot is riding on how the new judges and format changes for American Idol 2013 will affect viewership of the longtime singing competition.

So how did the Season 12 premiere do?

Sadly, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey didn’t bring in the big numbers Idol was hoping for.

According to The Wrap, the American Idol ratings for the January 16 premiere were 19 percent down from Season 11. A total of 17.9 million viewers tuned in, which is a 4 million drop from the previous year.

The decline in viewership is nothing new; the Season 11 premiere last year was down 21 percent in total viewers from the previous season.

The silver lining? Fox still beat out rival networks in ratings and total viewers overall, thanks to the Idol premiere.

Will you be tuning in to watch the rest of American Idol 2013?
