In our American Idol recap tonight, the top 7 Season 12 finalists will be taking on the song theme of “Classic Rock, No Ballads” — which have to admit is music to our ears. Ballads have been a dime a dozen in the American Idol performances this year and we’re ready to find out if these finalists can sing outside of the box. Who will rock it out and who will roll right to the bottom of the pack tonight? Join us for our American Idol 2013 recap and watch the performances with us!
From the American Idol spoilers we posted earlier about the song choices for tonight, there are a few finalists we are very anxious to see perform this evening. Knowing that Angie Miller is going to be back behind the piano is exciting and we love that she’s singing the most contemporary song choice tonight. We can also already hear Kree Harrison’s country twang doing awesome things with Janis Joplin. As for Lazaro Arbos, we are already anticipating the cringes in store from the American Idol judges when he tackles one of the most beloved songs of all time by Queen. Ouch. Whether it is finally Lazaro's time to go or not, let's just hope whoever does end up on the bottom and gets voted off tomorrow has a little more grace than Devin Velez did after he was eliminated last week!

And here we go!
American Idol Burnell Taylor Top 7 Performance – "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Bon Jovi
Judges: Keith Urban just can’t seem to stop laughing maniacally. He tells Burnell he has to assume “rock ‘n’ roll is not his thing” and he looked terribly uncomfortable. He says next time he gets a song that isn’t his thing, he needs to make it his own. Nicki Minaj says she wants to cuddle, eat, and squeeze Burnell today because he’s like a teddy bear tonight. Even though rock is not his thing, she still wants to hug him. Randy Jackson agrees it was not good and says Burnell was totally off the beat of the song. Mariah Carey says while it wasn’t typically what Burnell would sing, she felt he did have fun with it and he did a great job.
Our Rating: 6 out of 10

Our first group performance of the evening is a very odd duet pairing one of our front-runners, Angie Miller, with the person most beloved by Vote For The Worst, Lazaro Arbos.
Angela Miller & Lazaro Arbos - "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen
Judges: Nicki Minaj calls Angie and Lazaro “Ken and Barbie” and says Lazaro seemed to be comfortable up until he “forgot the lyrics again” and overall it wasn’t too bad. Randy Jackson says it started off rough but got a little better at the end. Lazaro says that, once again, he had never heard the song before he was supposed to perform it. Mariah Carey says Angie supported Lazaro in the performance but the song just really didn’t work as a duet, although Angie had some nice moments. Keith Urban thought it was too kitschy and “variety show-ish” but Lazaro at least looked more stylish tonight.
Our Verdict: Uncomfortable and weird
American Idol Kree Harrison Top 7 Performance – "Piece Of My Heart" by Janis Joplin
Judges: Randy Jackson says “that’s how you come out and rock the stage!” He says the show has finally started now tonight. He loves the bluesy tone in her voice tonight and he yells out his stereotypical catch phrase that she is “in it to win it!” Mariah Carey says Kree has the innate ability to chose her songs and tonight’s performance was possibly her favorite of the whole season. Keith Urban says he can’t critique a woman who irons all the other contestants’ shirts. He wants to know how hard it is to perform in those crazy boots she was wearing. He feels like something was holding her back in her performance and she confesses she had a pinched nerve that was keeping her from being her normal bouncy self. Nicki Minaj says no pinched nerve got in her way, Kreedom was “magificent!” Nicki says if she was voting right now, all her votes would go to Kree. And here comes Nicki’s stereotypical catch phrase: “I’m obsessed with you!”
Our Rating: 8 out of 10

Burnell Taylor & Candice Glover - "The Letter" by The Box Tops
Judges: Mariah Carey says she would have like to hear something a little more R&B classic, apparently forgetting that this is Rock ‘n’ Roll night and ballads are forbidden. But she says it was an A+ performance. Keith Urban says he loved it and he thought it was such a good song for both of them. Burnell was a shining star and Candice was a galaxy. Seriously, he said that. Nicki Minaj says Candice’s voice is clearly superior and it pierces through every single thing on this planet. Candice is apparently an astronaomical phenomenon. She says congrats and an awesome job to both! Randy Jackson says OMG Candice. When she first started singing, they all just went “wow” at the judges’ table.
Our Verdict: Smoking hot and awesome!
American Idol Janelle Arthur Top 7 Performance – "You May Be Right" by Billy Joel
Judges: Keith Urban is obsessed with women’s boots tonight. He immediately points out how much he loves Janell’s boots and how Richie Sambora wants them right now. He says Janelle looks comfortable and like a pro. It might not have been the perfect song choice, but she just keeps getting better and better every week. He says she is a contender. Nicki Minaj says Keith is not allowed to critique on fashion because that’s her job. She says Janelle was exceptional and girls are going to love her because she feels like a little girl’s best friend. Randy Jackson says Kree is authentic, real, and he loves her fringe vest. Okay. He says he felt like he was hearing concert Janelle tonight and he calls her the “great contender!” Mariah Carey
Our Rating: 7.5 out of 10

When we come back from break, Nicki Minaj has stolen Janelle’s boots and Randy Jackson has stolen her fringe vest. Ryan tries to give the vest to Mariah and she’s like hell no get that away from me.
American Idol Lazaro Arbos Top 7 Performance – "We Are The Champions" by Queen
Judges: Okay, we have to pay tribute to this comment on Lazaro’s performance from Nick Roman at Rickey.org: “Because the night is dark and full of terrors, Lazaro sings 'We Are the Champions” by Queen.'" We are literally squeeing over that remark right now. Seriously though, who thought this would be a good idea? Frankly, no one should EVER cover Freddie Mercury on any talent reality show and Lazaro singing Queen just makes us want to stuff wax in our ears and cry. Because they are insane, the judges actually don’t rip him to shreds. Since we heartily disagree, we will just leave it at that.
Our Rating: We plead the fifth.

Amber Holcomb, Janelle Arthur, & Kree Harrison - “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” by Billy Joel
Judges: Randy Jackson says “wow, wow, wow... that was unbelievable!” He thinks the three of them really sounded good together, like they were actually a group. He says that was fun and really good. Mariah Carey says it was very nice blending and America’s going to have a tough time choosing between all of them. Keith Urban says the three of them are great together and they should do more songs as a group. Nicki Minaj says the song choice put her to sleep. When the crowd disagrees, she says “What’s the night without a good boo?” She loves all over Amber thought and how hot she looks. She hated the performance though and thinks it was way too cheesy.
Our verdict: We agree with Nicki, it was cheesy. But it was still good.
American Idol Candice Glover Top 7 Performance – "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones
Judges: Mariah Carey says she loves Candice and babbles on about how America needs to vote so she can hear what she really wants to hear. Keith Urban says Candice is just so effortless and — continuing the theme from her group performance — otherworldly. Nicki Minaj says Candice’s voice was “amazing” but she fell asleep with this song too. She loudly yells “BOOOOOO” repeatedly at the crowd to preempt them from booing her and it makes everyone uncomfortable. Randy Jackson says Candice has an amazing voice but she also brought the Tina Turner kind of attitude to it too.
Our Rating: 9 out of 10

American Idol Amber Holcomb Top 7 Performance – "What About Love" by Heart
Judges: Nicki Minaj says Amber was striking tonight and the first line of the song totally melted her. She says Amber was her favorite of the night so far. Randy Jackson loves that Amber came out showing those legs all over tonight. Besides that though, he really heard Amber in the song and he loves, loves, loves this performance. Mariah Carey says she knew this song would be perfect for Amber.
Our Rating: 8.5 out of 10

American Idol Angie Miller Top 7 Performance – (with piano) - "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence featuring Paul McCoy
Judges: Nicki Minaj can’t speak over the loud cheers of the audience’s standing ovation. She hushes them and tells Angie she loves her in all black, it’s a good look for her. She says the song was a perfect choice for Angie for a rock theme song. Everything was working for her but she’d like to hear her do more songs like her original and the Colton Dixon song she did. Randy Jackson says Angie is theatrical, dramatic and she did an amazing job on the song. Mariah Carey says this song was really Angie and she really though it was a perfect match for her. Keith Urban says he loves Angie’s voice and he loves it when she plays the piano and sings. However, he really wants her to always pick songs that she is going to feel and lose herself in.
Our Rating: 7.5 out of 10
