Tonight we’re all about the guys! 10 will take the stage, but only five will survive. First up, host Ryan Seacrest introduces the guys who will be singing tonight. The guys had the opportunity to choose any song they wanted for the sudden death challenge.
Let’s start the performances!
American Idol 2013: Mathenee Treco - “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis Presley
Right off the bat, it seems obvious to us this song is not going to carry Mathenee to the Top 20. If ever this was a wrong song choice, this is it. He is very animated, but his voice is all over the place and way too over-the-top. Keith says he loves his power and loves how much he wants to entertain, but he was maybe entertaining too much. Nicki likes him, but thought the performance was “very cheesy and karaoke” to her. Randy doesn’t like the song choice at all for his voice. Mariah thought Mathenee was very authentic, but the performance was weak.
American Idol 2013: Gurpreet Singh Sarin - “Nothing Ever Hurt Like You” by James Morrison
This is just really... not... good. Keith says he wishes Gurpreet had his guitar and thinks his voice is really more suited to the acoustic thing. Nicki thought it was a bad choice as well and says “honey child, hell no!” Gurpreet kind of begs to go through, which is sad. Randy says it was just bad and more bad. Mariah is also not loving it one bit, but for some reason wants to know what other instruments Gurpreet might play. Maybe to distract him from the obvious fact he will not be making the American Idol Season 12 Top 20.
American Idol 2013: Vincent Powell - “Cause I Love You” by Lenny Williams
Now here we go! We knew Vincent was going to bring the hotness this evening and this is a “honey child, hell yes!” performance. This is one of the best guy vocals yet this season and we don’t even need to hear from the judges... but we do anyway. Keith is blown away and loving it. Nicki says it was old-fashioned but hot and awesome. Randy says he’s like D’Angelo or Frank Ocean and the show really started right now. “He’s in it to win it!” Mariah says “finally!” and butters him up with praise all over the place. Ryan Seacrest also asks for the option of wild child Zoanette in the audience, who says “Get it Papa Smurf! That’s my Boo!” Yep, that’s Zoanette for you.
American Idol 2013: Nick Boddington - “Say Something Now” by James Morrison
We love Nick, but this is probably his weakest performance so far. It’s not bad, but it’s just nothing really fabulous. Keith says he liked it, but he didn’t really connect all that well. Nicki says it wasn’t bad, but it “wasn’t a 10” tonight. Randy says he loves James Morrison but it might not have been the right song choice for him. He’s looking for “moments” from everyone and there was never a moment in this song. Mariah Carey says she heard a “moment” toward the end that was very nice.
American Idol 2013: Josh Holiday - “Better With You” by Josh Holiday
Josh decides to perform an original song, but it isn’t quite as spectacular as when Angela Miller tried the same trick. He seems a bit pitchy and he should have stayed at the piano all the way through. Keith thinks Josh is talented, but he needs to loosen up. Nicki thinks Josh should have stayed at the piano (what did we say!) and he seemed to be trying too hard in his performance. Randy says he “liked the song okay” but he wasn’t “wowed” by it. Mariah likes that Josh is also a songwriter and notes that singer/songwriters are some of the biggest names in the music business.
American Idol 2013: David Oliver Willis - “Fever”
David plays the guitar with his song, which is nice, but he just isn’t giving the kind of wow performance he needs. Keith thinks it was a bad song choice but he likes his voice a lot. Nicki is NOT happy... that Oliver is married. Well, it seems like maybe she isn’t. She thinks David sounded like he was performing for his family in a living room over the holidays. Randy thinks David has potential. Mariah says it wasn’t his best performance; she liked his “Motown moment” during the Hollywood Week group performance.
American Idol 2013: Bryant Tadeo - “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel
This is a great performance, although not one of those memorable ones we’ll be talking about years from now. Keith says he got the connection to the song he’s been waiting for. Nicki says she liked... the last bit of the song, but nothing else. Loud boos from the audience on that. Randy thinks the song just didn’t seem to go anywhere. Mariah says he sounds like a pro but he lost himself in the song here and there.
American Idol 2013: Burnell Tayler - “This Time” by John Legend
Let the sappy backstories begin! Burnell talks about the bad times of dealing with Hurricane Katrina, but there is nothing disastrous about his voice. The judges are all over it. Keith complimented Burnell’s performance and says he is an original. Nicki says she would pay to listen to him sing and he is the best singer tonight. She says no one else is even in his league. Randy says he didn’t think it was Burnell’s best performance, but he loves his originality and the emotion of his performance. Mariah says Burnell is genuine and she really wants him to stay in the competition.
American Idol 2013: Lazaro Arbos - “Tonight I Wanna Cry” by Keith Urban
Keith says he felt like Lazaro never really got comfortable with the song. However, he has this beautiful spirit that burns through the song and he felt that tonight. Nicki says she loves how he always gives them Lazaro just like he is. She says he played it safe “in a good way” and it was very truthful. Randy says every time he hit the chorus, there was a “sweet spot” in his voice and it was like no one else. He says Lazaro can really sing and he needs to relax and believe in it. Mariah says he has given better performances, but there is a purity and emotion to him that makes him special.
American Idol 2013: Cortez Shaw - “Titanium” by David Guetta
Cortez got the ending “pimp spot” this evening and it is well deserved. This is a huge performance and there is no doubt he will be going through to the next round. Cortez has proven he is a contender tonight. Keith Urban loves the song and thought it was a "bold, brave move" for Cortez to try it as a ballad. He isn't blown away by it and thinks Cortez didn't really nail the vocals. He thinks the really big notes did help carry him through the performance though. Nicki Minaj loves Cortez and thinks it was a really sexy good song choice. He's going to get her vote for sure. Randy Jackson is also liking the performance and thinks he has a huge range and a unique voice. Mariah Carey thinks the arrangement of the song was cool and Cortez gave a great performance. She wants to see what he'll bring to the stage next.
Now it's time for the judges to decide who will be going through to the next round! They have made their decisions and the five guys chosen to join the elite American Idol 2013 Top 20 are:
Vincent “Vince” Powell
Sadly, that means it’s the end of the road for Bryant, David, Gurpreet, Josh, and Mathenee. The sudden death round format made everything very cutthroat, so one bad song choice meant Idol dreams were dashed for some of these singers. There’s always next year (for some of them)!
