Who was eliminated on American Idol tonight? Find out which five guys made it through to the Season 12 Top 20, and which ones were sent home in our live American Idol recap starting right here at 8 pm.!
The sudden death rounds continue tonight as the first group of guys from the Season 12 Top 40 takes the stage. The male contestants who will be performing in tonight’s show are: Charlie Askew, Curtis Finch, Jr., Kevin Harris, Joshua “JDA” Davila, Paul Jolley, Johnny Keyser, Elijah Liu, Jimmy Smith, Devin Velez and Chris Watson.
Just like last night, who went home on American Idol 2013 tonight seems likely to depend largely on whether the competitors would choose the right song to perform. The girls who got eliminated on American Idol last night all chose songs that were either too big for them, or just didn’t let their vocals shine through. Now it’s the guys turn. Which ones will make the same mistake?
We know from our American Idol spoilers (thanks Rickey.org!) for tonight’s episode which of the contestants will go on to the Season 12 Top 20, and which will be cut. We won’t spoil it for you, unless you want to know (click here!), but judging from the song list... there are a couple of early favorites who apparently made some seriously bad choices and went home as a result.
Ready to watch the guys battle it out tonight for a spot in the Top 20? Our American Idol recap of Las Vegas round 2 starts right now!
Here we go!
Before we get the all-important performances, of course, we have to have a few minutes of random chit-chat and the introduction of tonight's singers. Okay Ryan Seacrest and American Idol judges, that's enough of that, let's get on with the show already!
The first competitor up tonight is Paul Jolly. He has dared to take on a song by one of the judges -- "Tonight I Wanna Cry" by Keith Urban.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Paul Jolly - "Tonight I Wanna Cry" by Keith Urban
The performance is a little safe and a little boring, but overall still very nice to listen to. Keith feels it is such an honor when someone chooses to perform one of his songs. He thanks Paul for a great rendition. Nicki says she got more out of Paul's previous performances and he might have overdone it a bit tonight. Randy thinks Paul has amazing range in his voice, which he thinks is rare for male country singers. Mariah thinks Paul gave a really engaging performance with an emotional oomph.
Oh look, it's repeat American Idol hopeful Johnny Keyser up next. He's such a cutie! But does his voice match his looks?
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Johnny Keyser - “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz
Keith says this was the best performance Johnny has given so far. Personally, I don't think that is saying a lot because it seemed kind of weak to me. Keith does note Johnny sounded a bit nervous. Nicki thinks he was actually very confident and it was a solid performance. BTW, Nicki does manage to finally find out that Johnny Keyser does NOT have a girlfriend. Watch out Johnny, if Nicki has anything to do with it, you might have one soon! Randy wasn't really into the song and felt Johnny lacked passion. Mariah says Johnny brings the sexy and she thinks he should go through to the next round.
Now up is the very fabulous J'DA, who comes wearing heels and much glitter. In fact, Ryan Seacrest says it is the most glitter he's seen on guys' night since Adam Lambert was a competitor!
American Idol Top 40 Performance: J'DA - “Rumor Has It” by Adele
J'DA is certainly an original with his shiny heels and slit-up dress. He has more makeup on than Nicki Minaj. His performance is entertaining, but it's also off pitch. Keith praises JDA on his originality but he's not lavish with the compliments. Nicki tells JDA to "work it girl" and JDA says he has to represent for the gays because he loves them. Nicki loves how fearless he is, but wasn't impressed by the vocals. Randy says JDA wins for best performance, but the actual singing wasn't there for him. Mariah thinks JDA was fabulous, however, and she thought he totally pulled it off.
Kevin Harris is in this for his kids, to show them anyone can follow their dreams.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Kevin Harris - "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams
Keith says Kevin has "crazy range" but he wasn't really sure about all the wild notes at the end. Nicki thinks Kevin was total perfection, but isn't sure the audience will connect with him. Randy thinks all the judges are just going to be disagreeable tonight because he thought the performance wasn't great. He says Kevin picked the wrong song to showcase his voice.
Chris thinks he attracted this opportunity to himself by working hard at being a waiter during the day and playing out at night.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Chris Watson - “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding
Whoever decided to mangle Otis Redding this way should be locked away somewhere. Not only is it a bad arrangement, Chris doesn't sound good on it either. Keith thinks the voice just wasn't there for Chris, but he connects well. Nicki is in LOVE. She wants to marry his vibrato and she thinks he is the prettiest man she's ever seen. Nicki is really, really, really into Chris. Like, wants to have his babies. It's a bit weird. Mariah thinks Chris is a survivor and she can hear his pain in his voice.
Barista Devin says his Mom coming to Vegas with him has been a tremendous help. Apparently she's done a really good job because he is about to give a very nice performance.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Devin Velez - “Listen/Oye” by Beyonce
Devin sings half of the song in Spanish and sounds awesome, but loses it a little at the end. Keith is truly wowed and think Devin really showed off who he is. Nicki thinks it is artistic and it was a great choice to sing in Spanish. Randy totally loved it as well and he thought the Spanish was dope. Mariah tells Devin not to question himself while he is performing, because she felt he was at the end. She can't wait to see what he does in a studio.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Elijah Liu - “Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars
Elijah is all about singing for the ladies, and how much he loves the ladies. The ladies, yeah, the ladies man.
Rickey.org calls Elijah the "Asian Bruno Mars" and someone on our Twitter feed called him the "Asian Justin Bieber" I believe. To me, he sounds like the Asian Michael Jackson, well, a little bit anyway. He has his great moments in the song, and some not so great ones as well. Keith thought it was a perfect song choice and thinks Elijah looks like a star. Nicki doesn't even care about what he was singing. She wants him! He's eighteen and sexy and now her very favorite boy! She wants him badly... to make a record. Or have her babies, or whatever. She's really all over the cute guys tonight...
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Charlie Askew - “Rocket Man” by Elton John
Charlie says he always goes to J'DA for fashion advice. Ryan says he is probably the only guy doing that... Charlie responds that he isn't sure about that. I love Charlie. Keith Urban says if Freddie Mercury had a love child out of Woodstock somehow. He had to ask what the hell Charlie was doing when he picked this song, but somehow it worked. He loves Charlie's total fearlessness. Nicki gives Charlie a standing ovation and says she wants to cuddle him like her little brother. She loves his artistic nature and his creativity. Randy just doesn't know what to think. He loved Charlie's performance but not so much the vocals. Charlie keeps yelling out at the audience over Randy's criticism. Charlie says "We're in Vegas, baby!" Randy just quits trying and says everyone should just perform because we're in Vegas, who cares about singing? Mariah just loves Charlie and all his quirks.
Jimmy wants to know what American Idol can do for a country singer. (Carrie Underwood, anyone?)
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Jimmy Smith - “Raining on Sunday” by Keith Urban
Keith says it is hard to critique someone who just performed something he's sang. He did like it though. Nicki thought it was totally boring, however. Apparently she doesn't think he is hot or sexy either, because she doesn't say she is "obsessed" with Jimmy. Mariah says she has fought for Jimmy and though this wasn't his best performance, she still thinks he has potential American should get to enjoy.
Curtis, who is a tutor, talks about giving back to the community. He's clearly a favorite going into Vegas week as the judges have given him serious praise in earlier rounds.
American Idol Top 40 Performance: Curtis Finch Jr. - "Superstar" by The Carpenters (Luther Vandross version)
Keith applauds the performance and he is thrilled with it. Nicki thinks it was also a brilliant performance and loves his range. Randy adored it too, but tells Curtis he needs to keep things a little younger. Mariah says she was almost in tears, but thinks Curtis could loosen it up a little. She thinks he has an amazing voice though. Curtis is clearly going through to the Top 20.
Now it is time for the judges to make their decision about who will be cut and who will move to the next round.
