On American Idol tonight, the Top 8 was cut down to the Top 7, as one contestant was sent home. Viewers must have had a tough time deciding with so many fan polls indicating a possible split decision between Lazaro Arbos and Devin Velez, but in the end it was Devin who received the fewest number of votes. The judges decided not to use their save on him, and so he was eliminated.

Next week, the Season 12 Top 7 will take on the theme of Rock 'n' Roll, with ballads reportedly completely off the table! It’ll be interesting to see how some contestants who’ve traditionally chosen slower songs, like Amber Holcomb and Burnell Taylor, will fare during this fast-paced week.

We have a feeling that country-tinged singers Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur will have no trouble picking appropriate songs for themselves. Similarly, we don’t see Angie Miller and Candice Glover having a difficult time impressing the judges next week. After watching Candice’s rendition of “Come Together” during the Top 9 performance show, we think she could sing just about anything!

However, we’re a bit worried for Lazaro Arbos who seems to be hanging on the the competition by a thread. He fared well during the Top 8 performances show with his take on Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life,” but his song choices have been iffy so far. If he chooses the wrong song, next week could be his last.
