As Eminem sang in “Lose Yourself,” “You only get one shot,” and that’s exactly what the Top 40 American Idol hopefuls will have as they head to Las Vegas for this week’s shows.
As host Ryan Seacrest says dramatically, these semi-finalists will have “one chance, one song -- no mercy” to prove themselves in this sudden death round and move on to the live shows.
The American Idol Season 12 hopefuls will not only have the pressure of only having one chance, but this will also be their first time on the show performing in front of a live audience. Considering both shows are two hours this week, it’s hard to imagine what the powers that be will offer as filler, but perhaps it will be used to give a little more background on the favored contestants.
As American Idol Net points out, each episode is filmed just days prior to the broadcast, which is unlike other years. This is likely to prevent the huge American Idol spoilers of seasons past. It makes sense, as the details about this season have been kept locked up tight.
We do have one big spoiler to add, however. According to The Idol Pad, the singers won’t be forced to choose a song from a predetermined list. Instead, they’ll have the opportunity to sing an original song, if they so choose, and also can use an instrument (or not).
It will be interesting to see which singers go which route. As we saw in the case of Angela Miller last week, original songs and playing instruments can really pay off if done well. Of course, Zoanette Johnson’s off-the-cuff riff behind a drum set will certainly never be forgotten, either.
