If you’re like us, when you heard this week’s song theme on American Idol 2013 was “Classic Rock, No Ballads,” you died a little inside picturing the Season 12 Top 7 taking on songs like “Free Bird” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” — shudder.
Don’t get us wrong, we find most of these singers to be mad talented, but we think this ballad-loving group may struggle a bit. There’s nary an Elise Testone-type in the group, and most of them failed Beatles 101 a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, we went ahead and chose songs that we can picture them doing without making the American Idol judges groan, and here they are!
Lazaro Arbos: Love it or hate it, this controversial singer is taking on a classic rock song this week and–we repeat–HE CAN’T DO A BALLAD! Ugh, this could get ugly. As someone in a chatroom mentioned earlier, he may want to go with “Another One Bites the Dust”. Our pick for him is “Brown Eyed Girl”. Come on, you know you can picture that.
Amber Holcomb: It will be a lot to live up to since Haley Reinhart did this song more than proud, but we can see Amber taking on “House Of The Rising Sun”.
Janelle Arthur: This girl has had more ups and downs on this show than a roller coaster. Last week, she struggled during her duet but turned around and gave a super tender acoustic performance. We think if she brought out her guitar again and performed “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” it could be a great week for her. It’s on the border of being ballad-y, but we can see it passing.
Burnell Taylor: Oh boy, this week should be interesting for this guy if nothing else. He’s yet to have any serious misstep in the competition and, yet, when we think of his voice, our mind doesn’t go to classic rock. Because Lenny Kravitz rocked this song, we can kind of picture him doing “American Woman”.
Angie Miller: Angie, Angie, Angie...we had her as a front-runner but we’re still having nightmares over last week’s debacle that was her performance of “Shop Around,” so we’re a bit worried about this theme for her. While we’d love to have an LOL moment and have her choose “Angie” by the Rolling Stones, we can see her doing “Barracuda”.
Candice Glover: Much like Burnell, this girl has yet to disappoint, but we think this week could be her first challenge. We’d love it if she really shook things up with this week and went with “Sweet Emotion”.
Kree Harrison: Many are probably expecting Kree to shine the brightest this week (us included!), so we hope she doesn’t succumb to the pressure. She could definitely do a lot of songs in this genre proud, but we get a very Fleetwood Mac feeling from her. At first, we were thinking “Go Your Own Way,” but we think she could rock a little harder with “Second Hand News”.
What would you choose for the American Idol 2013 Top 7 to sing?
