If viewers had ever doubted American Idol’s ability to produce hitmakers, all they would need to do is look at the Season 11 alums. Phillip Phillips has had a stellar reign on the charts with his debut album, The Other Side of the Moon. Now, Colton Dixon, the second alum from that season to release an album, is proving he has what it takes, too.

The Christian singer’s first effort, A Messenger, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Christian & Gospel album chart, #1 on Billboard’s Christian & Gospel Digital album chart, #1 on Billboard’s Christian & Gospel Rock/Alternative album chart, and 15 on Billboard’s Top Top 200 chart this week. Drop it like it’s hot!

Much like P2’s success with his single, “Home,” Colton has a song that has really connected with people. Called a “fiery anthem” by his reps, “You Are” was selected as USA Today’s Song of the Week when it was first released in October. It hit #1 on the iTunes Christian & Gospel singles chart in its first week as well.

Colton was also the first Idol alum to ever perform an original song while on the American Idols Live! Tour. The song, “Never Gone,” was an instant hit, selling 21,000 units in its first week.

If you happen to be taking a hop, skip, and a jump over to Manila any time soon, you can catch Colton performing with fellow alum Jessica Sanchez at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. He’s also going out on tour in support of his album, joining fellow Christian band Third Day on The Miracle Tour, beginning February 21.

What do you think of Colton’s album? Which season 11 alum do you hope releases an album yet?
