Jaws across America collectively dropped when it was revealed last night that American Idol  fave Jessica Sanchez came in at the bottom after a nationwide vote. Close followers of the show knew something was up shortly before last night’s episode aired. Tweets from host Ryan Seacrest and producer Nigel Lythgoe hinted at a “shocking” twist in the voting results. They sure weren’t messing around!

But equally flabbergasted were the judges themselves. In an interview with E!Online, Randy Jackson postulated how a consistently strong performer like Jessica could have ended up at the bottom of the voting heap. “...What I think what happens, honestly, is people forget to vote and they think their favorites are safe. I mean you saw the bottom three. Oh my god, it’s like ‘What’s going on?’”

As to speculation about whether Jessica’s save was predetermined, Randy denied any fishy business. “We find out when you find out,” he said about the elimination. “That’s why we were shocked tonight. We were literally shocked.”

Regarding the bottom 3, Steven Tyler also told E!, “When we saw all three, that’s why I said, ‘We’re saving them.’ Because this is crazy.”

All the excitement from last night really puts the pressure on for next week. Nigel tweeted last night that viewers can expect not one but two songs from each contestant. Does double the music means double the pressure!
