The news that Mariah Carey will join the American Idol judging panel has partially solved the mystery of who will oversee Season 12 of the hit singing competition.

Now Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly hints that two more fresh faces could be joining the judges table.

During a chat as part of the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Kevin hinted that big changes were in the works for Idol.

Although the show is as vital as ever, our ratings were down," he said. "Not being the only game in town now, we needed to keep things fresh."

Part of that plan will involve shaking up the judging panel, but he is mum on who else would be joining Mariah’s ranks.

"There are some 'nobodys' in the mix, there are some people who are not a household name," explained Kevin.

As to whether Idol will adopt Nigel Lythgoe’s idea of changing judges every year to let artists pursue their personal goals, the Fox exec was warm to the prospect.

“I'm afraid we will, if not every year, I think change is going to be part of the show going forward,” he told reporters, noting that the landscape for singing competition shows has dramatically changed over the last decade.

After 11 years of sitting comfortably at the top of the heap, we’re glad to hear the crew behind Idol won’t be resting on its laurels!
