American Idol ratings have slipped even further into the muck and hit a new low. When you consider the show has already been suffering from the worst viewership since 2002, that is not good news for FOX.

American Idol 2013 ratings dropped a huge 13% from last week, making this the worst American Idol performances Wednesday night show ever, according to our friends over at Rickey.org. And that's after last week's Thursday night results show was already down 50 percent from the Season 12 premiere.

To add insult to injury, ABC’s Modern Family — which scored its own season low — beat out Idol in their shared head-to-head hour. The American Idol performances show earned a 3.1 in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 category, which is the show’s lowest Wednesday ratings in history. Modern Family, in comparison, earned a 3.2 in the 18 to 49 age group, according to TVbytheNumbers.

Making things worse over at Fox, we’re sure, is the news that American Idol ratings scored lower than both The Voice and Dancing With the Stars this week in both the 18 to 49 category and in overall number of viewers. Expectations are that things are only going to get worse, with Idol probably falling below a 3.0 rating by next week.

Has American Idol 2013 lived past it’s prime and needs to be put out of its misery? Did producers make a terrible mistake in bringing on judges Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey? Or are this season’s contestants just the least interesting group of finalists ever to step onto the Idol stage?
