American Idol Season 2 contender Kimberly Caldwell became as well known for her outgoing personality as her stellar, raspy vocals. After her impressive run on the show, the gorgeous blonde not only released an album, but she used her extroverted nature to land several gigs hosting TV shows. She’s shown us that American Idol contestants can go on to do things in addition to singing, and she’s even adding another accolade to the list — handbag designer.
You’re not anyone in the world of celebs until you’ve got your own accessories line, and Kimberly is now on the list of who’s who. Of course, hers wasn’t handed to her as many celebs have happen, but was the result of a lot of hands-on effort.
One day, Kimberly, who has always loved crafting things with her hands, came across a bag of leather scraps at a sewing store. She bought the whole box and, through a series of trial and error and enlisting the helps of some leather experts, she figured out how to sew and put together leather bags.
“To sew leather, you can’t just use a rinky-dink machine,” she explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “There were two women there who took me under their wing and showed me the tools that I needed. I started making things and I would get frustrated sometimes and some bags that you’ll see were remade three different times because I wasn’t happy with the way they came out. I’m literally self-taught. Every single time I make something, I get better and every time I get better, the bags get cooler.”
The bags are not just for women. In fact, Kimberly’s collection includes men’s big travel backpacks “that are distressed and rugged with industrial straps.” While she sells bags that are perfect for traveling and mini-purses that are good for everyday use, Kimberly says backpacks are her number one sellers.
“I‘ve said for a long time that I would love to do an accessory line of some kind,” the starlet, who briefly dated fellow American Idol alum David Cook, told THR. But don’t expect that to keep her from her music career. In fact, as she put it, “I’m probably going to have to get a few elves to start helping me out because I’m working with my producer and guitar player, Andrew Dixon, who is also one of my best friends in the whole world. I write so well with him.” Kimberly says they’ll write the entire album in Andrew’s studio, and that they’re working with their “musician friends” who will be “laying down their instruments” for various tracks. As she says, “I’m really, really excited about it.”
As for what she thinks of season 12, Kimberly said she’s impressed with the changes the producers have made, saying “it’s looking like a newer, fresher show.” The American Idol alum, who blogs about the show semi-weekly for E! Online, also said that she likes that the show is focusing more on the human interest part of the singers. As she put it, “I like that they’re giving the contestants more time to show their personalities and do their thing and that’s what I like about Janelle Arthur. She’s so Kellie Pickler. She knows how to reel them in.”
