Who inspires Phillip Phillips to become a better musician?

Christina Grimmie of The Road Show sat down with the American Idol Season 11 champ and his brother-in-law, Ben Neil, who P2 credits with helping him to seriously pursue music.

“I just felt bad for him,” he joked of choosing Ben as his personal music idol. “He’s a great guy and he’s a great musician. I would watch him play, and I was like, ‘Whoa, he’s really good.’”

Encouraged by Ben, Phillip picked up the guitar and the two started playing music together.

“We had little band for four years or so, and we’d jam out and stuff,” said Ben, as the camera flipped through pictures of P2 as a youngin’.  “He always got better and better.”

So has winning Idol changed Phillip at all?

“No, it hasn’t,” said Ben. “I guess i’m kinda one of the ways you can see that. He’s out here and he still remembers me. We’ve always jammed and here I am, still a part of it.”

“I’m kind of awesome, is what he's trying to say,” Phillip quipped.

Glad to know he hasn’t forgotten his roots! Watch the full interview below.
