American Idol 2013 finalist Angela Miller went from being a strong early favorite to a potential superstar winner of Season 12 after performing her original song “You Set Me Free” during the Hollywood Week rounds. The American Idol judges were so wowed by the performance, they kept bringing it up during their critiques for weeks after they heard it.
Deciding to do an original song during such a critical moment in the competition was a very bold move. In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint, Angie Miller tells us why she rolled the dice in such a big way.
You took such a massive risk singing an original song. What was it that felt right about that decision?
Oh, I love that song, and it's funny like a few months before being like, “Hey, Mom. Listen to my original song.” And now like singing it in front of America, it was amazing feedback.
We know how it worked out, and obviously, you landed on top. Did you consider the risks?
Definitely. I mean, choosing the song we had to do for that round for Hollywood, it was definitely a risk, and I was like, “Should I do my original?” Then I was like, “Okay. I'll just do it.” And I'm so glad that I did.
