American Idol 2013 finalist Candice Glover was one of the few performers last week to receive extremely positive praise from the judges for both her solo and her group number. In a press interview after the show, Candice talked about how good feedback just adds more pressure, and what she thought about how harsh the judges were with some of the other contestants.
WP: How was going first?
A: When I first heard in the morning I was like, "Yay! I'm opening the show!" And today I was like "Oh, I'm opening the show." It's a lot of pressure because you want to do a good job and you can’t start the show off on a bad note so I was actually crying and the makeup artist was like "Okay, tear. Tear," and dabbed by face because I didn't want to mess up my makeup. But I was under a lot of pressure but I think it came together good.
Q: Do you feel its fair to have to do group numbers sometimes before your solo?
A: I think it is pretty fair. You're never 100 percent prepared for what American Idol is going to throw at you so I just took it all in stride. I was like "whatever. If you want me to do cartwheels I'll do it." You roll with the punches and you just hope for the best.
Q: Do you feel like you're a good flirt now after that group number?
A: Oh. Yeah. I was looking at him and he was doing some pretty weird dance moves. I'm not a flirt at all. I'm shy. I'm not a flirt and Angie was like "There's a hot guy in the audience that you want to…" And I was like, "Angie, no matter how you put it, I'm not going to be a flirt. I'm not. I just can't go there." I don't know. But they are phenomenal. I'm so glad it was the three of us.
Q: I feel like you led the pack in that group number.
A: Really? Aside from the flirting thing I felt pretty great up there. I just don’t like the [flirting] that's just not me. It's not.
Q: You were one of the only people to get totally good feedback…
A: They were being really mean and hard on some of my guys and some of my girls and I just…I don't know. When I get good feedback, to be honest, it makes you feel good but the next you think "gosh, well how am I going to top that so it puts even more pressure than if you had gotten a bad comment because there is room to grow when you get a bad comment.
Q; Do you think they felt they had to be harsher because Jimmy said they were being too easy on you all?
A: I didn't think about that. That is probably what it is and the judges are under pressure too, like we are. They want to give us some constructive stuff. I just take everything they say and run with it.
WP: Do you think they'll continue to be that harsh leading into the final weeks of Idol?
A: Next week there is only going to be seven people and I feel like if I'm here its going to get really, really strict on everything so I can't slack off in one area to focus on another one. Everything has to come together and I just have to work on being the best.
Q: Do you have a name for your fans yet?
A: Candy Canes! They are the sweetest. Oh my god, isn’t that just genius?
Q: What is your favorite performance from Idol past?
A: I really love Casey Abrams. He is so jazzy and I take certain things from him. I got to meet him and I was just star struck. He's just think hes one of the most creative people I've ever seen in my whole life so almost all his stuff. He even did "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" that I did so I really enjoyed that one.
Q: Who sang it better?
A: Casey! He's great. Oh my God.
