American Idol winner Carrie Underwood has been chosen to replace Faith Hill as the official theme singer for Sunday Night Football on NBC. The Season 4 winner will debut her version of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” on the first Sunday Night Football broadcast of the season on September 8.
“I am thrilled to be a part of NBC’s Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me,” Carrie said in a press conference call on Tuesday. Her husband, Mike Fisher, is very excited she got the gig, “He is a sports dude! He definitely loves football. He’s got a lot of friends who play for different teams. Me being a part of that with them and with a sport that he loves, I think it will make it all the better for him.”
Sunday Night Football producer Fred Gaudelli said bringing on the former American Idol winner was a given. When Faith Hill, who took on the Sunday Night Football theme song duties in 2007, decided to pass along the torch back in February, he instantly knew he wanted Carrie.
"Carrie Underwood was our first and only choice to perform the Sunday Night Football opening. She's one of America's most popular entertainers and the perfect fit for our show.”
Country superstar Carrie can’t wait to walk in Faith’s shadow in taking over the Sunday Night Football theme. “Faith was so amazing at it…and [brought] such an energy to the even every Sunday night,” Carrie said of her predecessor. “For me, to have that opportunity, to follow in her footsteps and do something really cool like that, it sounded like fun!”
