Carrie Underwood was applauded by many when she recently declared her support of gay marriage. But some of her fans were less than thrilled by the stance.

Many conservatives took issue with her belief that “Above all, God wanted us to love others… It’s not up to me to judge anybody.” And now she’s responding to those who didn’t approve of her viewpoint on same-sex marriage rights.

“I was asked a difficult question in the last five minutes of an interview and I answered it the best way I knew how,” she explained to the Associated Press. “I love making music and I generally try to stay out of any kind of controversy.”

It might sound a little bit like Carrie’s backpedaling on the issue, but she added, “The role-model word is really scary to me, because no matter what happens in your life, something you do, wear, say sing, whatever — somebody somewhere is probably not going to like it too well.”

We agree. You can’t win ‘em all. Stay strong, Carrie!
