Eliminated contestants rarely make a return to American Idol, but Season 12 has bent the rules a bit.

In a brand new twist, viewers get to vote for one runner-up from the Top 20 to join the American Idol 2013 Top 10 contestants on tour this summer. One girl and one guy got to sing it out tonight, and the first to take the stage was Charlie Askew!

We were a bit worried about the awkward contestant when he didn’t make it into the Season 12 Top 10, but it was a welcome surprise to see him perform again on the Idol stage.

For his big comeback, he performed an original song called “Sky Blue Diamond” and even played the piano at the same time. We were totally impressed by his clear vocals and the fact that he wrote the tune himself! He told host Ryan Seacrest that he wrote the song a couple of months ago, and that it was partly inspired by a breakup he went through after dating a girl for two and a half years.

What did you think of Charlie’s song? Would you like to see him on the American Idol 2013 summer tour, or will you vote for Aubrey Cleland instead?
