American Idol Season 11 alum Colton Dixon has been hard at work since finishing in seventh place on the show.

He’ll be debuting an original single on the American Idol summer tour, which begins today in Detroit, Michigan, and he hopes to have a Christian album out before the end of the year.

“I honestly don't know why I was allowed to do an original song on tour, “he said to Yahoo. “I'm just so appreciative to have people believe in my music enough to give me this opportunity, and I'm stoked to be able to give my fans a glimpse of what I have been working so hard on in the studio.”

The song is titled “Never Gone,” and a preview video of Colton rehearsing the tune shows that it fits right in with his rock ballad style. He co-wrote the tune with Adam Watts and Andy Dodd (who've worked with Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus), as well as Gannin Arnold (of Red Decibel Productions).

As for the album he’s working on, he told Zap2it, “We're definitely planning to release [an album] by the end of the year, and it's gonna be in the Christian world... It is Christian music, but not your typical contemporary Christian music. It's very artsy and edgy, which I love about it.”

When Colton was eliminated on the April 19 episode, judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson both predicted he would go on to have a fantastic career in music. Looks like Colton’s doing his darndest to make those predictions come true!
