Last night on the American Idol finale, R&B star Jason Derulo inspired fans with a performance of his new single, “Undefeated.” But this wasn’t just any performance: It was the first time Jason had taken the stage since a freak accident over four months ago left him with a fractured neck. When we caught up to the star on the red carpet last night, Jason talked about how his new love, American Idol Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, helped him through a very difficult recovery. While the two sound as close as can be, Jason did fess up to a little conflict brewing between the lovebirds. It seems only one of them is going to be happy when we find out who wins American Idol tonight!

How did you feel about your performance tonight, which was your first after your accident?

Jason Derulo: Tonight’s performance was invigorating. It was like a second chance at life.

How did Jordin [Sparks] help you prepare?

She helped me out with rehearsing for tonight. Just by coming to the rehearsals. She has this photographic memory that’s crazy so I’ll forget a move and she’ll be like ‘I think it was like this.’

Have you recorded together?

Yeah, we’ve been in the studio. We’ve done about four songs so far, but I record hundreds of songs for my album. I’m sure she’ll be on that.

How did she help you recover?

I guess the best way to put it is her being the backbone of the whole situation. It was a rough process and I guess a lot of people get really, really low into a crazy depression and stuff like that. But when you have somebody, it makes everything so much better. And just her being there when she could’ve been anywhere else in the world, she was that backbone for me.

On Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips:

If I was voting tonight I would be voting for Jessica. I’m Team Jessica. Jordin is actually Team Phillip, so we have this little wager going on right now. If she wins, I have to cook her a nice meal and I can’t even cook hot dogs, let alone an actual meal. So I have to get a recipe book and do it right. If I win, she has to give me a foot massage. She hates feet, so I’m like ‘yeah, I want a ten-minute foot massage.’

What do you like about Jessica?

I think she has a brilliant voice. I could listen to her all the time.
