After being in the bottom two on American Idol 2013’s results show last week, Devin Velez had to know that the song choice for this week is crucial. The Chicago native’s ability to weave Spanish into his songs, such as with his performance of Beyonce’s “Listen,” was what initially drew the American Idol 2013 judges to him. However, he had a bit of a misstep with a lackluster performance last week.

Devin went with “Temporary Home” for the “Music of the American Idols” theme week, and the judges (with the exception of Nicki Minaj, who loved the performance) were underwhelmed, to say the least. Jimmy Iovine warned him that it was going to be too safe of a song choice, and Randy Jackson confirmed that after the performance. As the Dawg put it, “That was way too safe. You underplayed yourself.” He advised him to “go for broke every time on this stage,” and we think that’s exactly what he’ll do to stay out of the bottom this week.

Devin recently mentioned that Burnell Taylor is his biggest competition and, while we agree when it comes to the guys, we think the girls are truly dominating this season. If Devin doesn’t step out of his comfort zone and fast, he could be reaching the end of the Idol road sooner rather than later.
