American Idol 2013 finalist Devin Velez didn’t receive the best response from the judges last week, but he plans to use their criticism to keep from repeating the same mistakes. We spoke to Devin after last week’s Top 10 results show to ask him how he felt about his performance and who he thinks his biggest competition is on American Idol Season 12.
What did you think of the judge’s comments?
You know today it was the first time in the whole competition that I’ve gotten negative critiques but surprisingly not from Nicki who is usually the one bashing people So I was happy that she was on my side but being that it’s the first time I got negative critiques I’m going to take it in a good way. I’m not going to look at it and put myself down, you know I choose my songs for a reason, I’m not going to go back on my decisions but I’m going to use that for next week. I’m not going to make the same mistakes.
Who do you think favors you the most?
You know I think it’s a fight between Randy and Mariah of people that like me the most just because it’s always good, it’s always praises and Mariah and I had a connection just from the get.
What did you think of Nicki showing up late?
You know there was traffic; there was nothing she could do about it. (Cough, cough) I’m glad that she got there for my performance.
You chose a song that Carrie sang how did you get to that?
You know this theme was a little difficult just because there wasn’t a lot of good songs but I chose the song that had the most meaning for me. For me the message is better than the actual song itself. The first couple of years that I was growing up it was just me and my mom and so the song talks about a little boy and a mother struggling with her job and stuff like that so I thought because I had the most connection I was like we should do it. It felt very me so that’s why I’m not going to go back on my decision I thing it was a great song for me.
Who is your biggest personal competition?
That’s difficult; you know I think it would be Burnell Taylor but just because I think we’re the same different if that makes sense. We both have tones in the competition that can’t be related to any other person. We don’t sound like anybody else and because of that we have a very distinct tone and I think that’s what the judges and what America likes. They like the tone that is just when you hear it you know that that’s Burnell, you know that that’s Devin.
