Though he may be a judge on American Idol this go'round, Season 13, Harry Connick Jr. was in the running to join J.Lo at the table as early as Season 10 — and joked that it was a "hairy" situation.

During Season 9, Harry guest-starred on the show as a musical mentor, and his appearance was so well-liked that many speculated whether the jazz singer would himself sit behind the judging table. Harry expressed interest at the time but, of course, was ultimately passed over for Jennifer and Steven Tyler, who so famously revitalized Idol with their on-screen chemistry and sympathetic rulings.

Even though we loved Steven as an Idol judge, we can’t help but wonder why those negotiations fell through. In a 2011 interview with Access Hollywood, Harry put forth his own theory: “I couldn’t grow my hair fast enough. Steven Tyler beat me to it, and how are you going to compete with that? I tried and I pushed and pushed, but Steven — he already had shoulder-length [hair]. That’s what they were looking for.”

Oh, that Harry… such a jokester!
