Blonde Brit Hollie Cavanagh may have finished fourth on Season 11 of American Idol, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I couldn’t be happier,” she said during a press junket for the American Idols Live! Tour, which kicks off tonight in Detroit, Michigan.
Hollie also talked about why Idol is perfect just the way it is, what advice she still carries from the judges, and her admiration for guest mentor Stevie Nicks.
Wetpaint Entertainment: So how is life after Idol?
Hollie Cavanagh: It's good. It's different not going into press every day.
You missed us is what you're telling me.
That's what I was getting at, but I didn't say it. But it's weird not being on the stage and going through the schedule that we had. And it's sad to think that that part's over with. I don't want to imagine what it's going to be like when the tour's done. I probably won't be able to sing on the last show. We'll all be crying. Well, I will.
Have you had any fun fan interactions?
Yeah. I've had quite a few. It's always weird to have people know who you are or recognize you and ask for pictures because I'm definitely not used to it yet. And I still think we're all kind of in the Idol bubble, but when I went home, they did have a homecoming for me. And that's the most amount of people that we’ve ever gotten in one spot in my hometown.
Is that the coolest thing that's happened since, or other big, cool moments since Idol?
Well, actually, the Dallas Mavericks asked me to sing at one of their games, but unfortunately, it's the first day of our opening show. So I can't really miss that one.
A couple of months ago, you said you were taking mascara, food, and shoes with you on tour. Has that changed?
No, absolutely, not. Still mascara, for sure, and it's still definitely food. Although I'm worried because I feel like I've been packing some pounds…
Running around night after night after night, it's going to be a workout in itself?
That's true. I didn't think about that.
How have rehearsals been going?
Really good. It's really fun. It's not stressful. It's fun. I'm enjoying it.
You get to choose what to do?
We had a lot of say in our solo songs, but the group songs, they were pretty much set in stone. But they're all good group songs, so we're excited for them. It's not like there's any song that we're like, ‘ugh, we hate this song.’
Now that you've been on the show, what's the one thing you would change about it?
I honestly don't know. I feel like I wouldn't have changed anything because I'm turning into the performer that I want to be. This is my beginning. This is me growing, and a lot of people do that on their own, through concerts and stuff. I got to do it on the Idol stage, and now I'm getting to do it on tour. I think everything that has happened to me this year during Idol happened for a reason.
Frustrations and all?
Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I finished fourth, and I couldn't be happier about it. Of course, there were times when you were like, ‘Oh, why did I do this,’ when you're sleep deprived and have to sing the next morning.
Was there any memorable piece of advice that you got from judges that you still take with you?
Definitely — the one where they just told me to forget about everyone. And I think on tour, it will be good because I'm not worried about what people are thinking because they are there because they love the show, and they love us. And if anybody's there that doesn't like me, well, you know what? You paid. You’re going to have to sit there.
Would you do something liked Broadway in the future?
I mean I've always loved to be like a Mariah Carey or Katy Perry. I feel you have to make your big career, and then go into Broadway, because once you go straight into Broadway, that's how everyone knows you, and you can't get out of it.
You mentioned Katy Perry and Mariah just then. If Jennifer Lopez should not come back, would you like to see either of those as a judge?
No, absolutely not because I'm not there.
Who do you think would make a good replacement.
They should put Stevie Nicks on the panel. She really did her homework on us. So that was good.
