More information has been released about how online voting will work for American Idol. First off, online voting will start the same time other voting starts, directly after the first Idol performance episode on Tuesday, March 1. Fans will have to sign in to the voting page on Americanidol.com with their Facebook login information and will be able to vote up to 50 times per voting period. This contradicts earlier reports that online voting would actually take place on a Facebook page. Only fans with registered Facebook accounts in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands may vote, though phone voting and text voting will continue as always.

American Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller expressed excitement about the new online voting system. Said Fuller, “We have been wanting to do online voting for several years, and now Facebook has offered us a secure solution and we are ready to go. The show has always involved a high level of engagement with its viewers through texting and phone voting, and it’s great to expand on this tradition.”

We’re right there with you, Simon!
