Where in the world is Ryan Seacrest? Interestingly enough, he just wrapped a gig hosting the Today show! As you might recall, the American Idol host and eligible bachelor was brought on to the controversial NBC morning show last April as a special correspondent. He was given quite a bit of exposure at the Peacock Network during the 2012 Olympics.
This morning, as he was halfway into his two-year deal with NBC, Ryan co-hosted Today’s entire 8 a.m. hour with the rumored soon-to-be-ousted Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and the entire gang. In fact, the folks tweeted an Instagram photo of them looking a bit too cozy, lying in a giant bed together. Ryan took on a news segment, a few water cooler surveys, and a cooking segment, with Matt seeming like the sidekick during the whole shebang.
The host is said to be taking on more responsibilities at NBC while simultaneously cutting back on his E! duties. And, as RumorFix.com points out, the timing is more than just a little suspicious. The highly controversial book, Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning Television, written by New York Times’ Brian Stelter, just hit shelves today. The book is said to be a scandalous tell-all that will air the morning show’s dirty laundry from the past year, including the highly publicized and painfully tacky exit of former Today host Ann Curry.
As RumorFix also suggests, this could be the beginning of the official passing of the torch to Ryan, or perhaps it’s a strategic move to incorporate the popular Idol host in order to boost their falling ratings.
What is interesting is another recent report said the big wigs at NBC had actually approached Anderson Cooper to take Matt Lauer’s place, but Matt apparently called Anderson to let him know his displeasure with the entire transaction. Anderson and Ryan’s names are in the mix with Today co-host Willie Geist and Meet The Press host David Gregory, who are all allegedly being considered to fill Matt’s (tiny!) shoes. This all coincides with another rumor that Matt Lauer is set to take over hosting Jeopardy! when host Alex Trebek retires.
We couldn’t agree more on the interesting timing of it all, especially considering the fact that we recently stumbled across a rumor that the powers that be at American Idol are considering a huge shakeup for the show next year. The changes, which are supposedly going to be made to give the show a boost in ratings, may or may not include getting rid of Ryan as host. The horror!
What would you think of Ryan taking over for Matt? Would you miss him on American Idol?
