There’s always one hopeful who seems to have more ups and downs on American Idol than a roller coaster and, this season, that’s Top 6 finalist Janelle Arthur. During Hollywood Week, she got an early lead against many of the others, with the judges showing absolute adoration for her ability to bring back that old school country sound that’s been sorely missed. However, she’s had a few bad song choices lately, and struggled badly during a duet against fellow country contestant Kree Harrison.

Last week, we weren’t all that fond of this Kree’s song choice, but most of the judges seemed to love it. For classic rock week, she countrified the bejeezuz out of Billy Joel’s “You May Be Right”. Nicki Minaj said the performance was “exceptional” and that she’s got a best friend quality that girls are going to love. Keith Urban agreed with us that it wasn’t the best song choice, but said she always comes “barreling out,” and that she keeps getting better and better. Randy Jackson called her “the great contender.” Oh, and of course, her bedazzled boots got a LOT of attention, too.

While we don’t know if she has the widespread appeal to win American Idol Season 12, we think she’ll have a long career in country music after her run on the show.
