Not only is Jessica Sanchez proud of her Filipino heritage, but she considers herself one with the Pinoy population.

The American Idol Season 11 runner-up suffered some criticism last week when Courtney Blooding, the manager of Filipino singer Charice (known in the U.S. for her role as Sunshine Corazon on Glee), questioned why fans in the Philippines have welcomed Jessica with such open arms even though she was born and raised in the United States.

“Here is the question...why do the Philippines claim Jessica Sanchez? Jessica was born [sic] an raised in the US. I don't THINK she speaks tagalog,” Courtney tweeted.

Now, the pint-sized singer herself is addressing the matter herself, telling the Philippine Star, “I was born in America, but I consider myself a Filipino.”

Calling the Philippines her “second home,” Jessica said that she can’t wait to journey back and learn more about the country after enjoying the sights and cuisine during her recent stay.

Jessica’s mother Editha also came to her daughter’s defense earlier this week, saying that although Jessica is of mixed Mexican and Filipino descent, she grew up very close to her relatives from the Philippines.
