Jessica Sanchez openly expressed pride in her Filipino heritage following some criticism about her acceptance in the Philippines. Now, the American Idol runner-up is explaining why her success in the United States is so important to her home away from home.

“Us Filipinos love music,” she said during a press conference for Bench clothing in Manila. “I’m glad that I can put us Filipinos on the map in the States … I’m really pushing to put my music on the radio so that Filipinos aren’t just, you know, they don’t look at us like minorities, like we can’t make it on the radio … so, I’m really pushing for us to represent ourselves in the States.”

Visiting the place where her mother is from, she explained, was like opening “a whole new chapter” to her life and has inspired her to return soon.

“I came here not knowing what to expect, and it’s completely opened my eyes and my heart,” Jessica said.
