Katharine McPhee returns to her roots on Thursday night’s results show to prove that nabbing that runner-up spot on American Idol can lead to a smash hit of a career. She’ll team up with One Republic to sing “If I Lose Myself,” a song off the band’s latest album, Naive. One Republic’s frontman, Ryan Tedder, and the Idol alum have already collaborated, as they performed a song called “Touch Me” on NBC’s Smash last season–a song that was written for Kat’s role on the show.

During her impressive run on season five of Idol, Katharine was as well known for her gorgeous looks and stylish ensembles as her powerful ballads. She certainly wasn’t a one-trick pony, though. In fact, many likely recall the night the stunner chose to sing KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” while seated on the ground. Katharine also had an emotional backstory to tell, as she suffered from bulimia since she was young, and was treated for it while on the show.

Since coming in second to Taylor Hicks that season, Katharine has gone on to have roles on the internet series, lonelygirl15, along with Ugly Betty, CSI: NY, Community, and now her current show, Smash. And, having landed on Forbes’ list for the top ten highest-earning American Idol alums, we’d say she’s certainly considered a success.
