On American Idol’s very first season, Kelly Clarkson blazed through the competition and emerged victorious. How? By beating herself every week! And that’s exactly how she thinks one of the seven remaining Duets competitors will end up winning.

Speaking to Zap2it about her show Duets — the fourth episode for which airs tonight — Kelly talked about being both a mentor and a part of the competition, and she mentioned bringing her A-Game each week.

“I think how you get to the top is by competing with yourself, and that's what I did on American Idol,” she explained. “Every week, I'd try to one-up something or to showcase something different that I thought maybe other people couldn't do. It's like a strategy of knowing when to hold back or shine.”

Kelly also says judges and contestants alike have to really focus on themselves for Duets.

“Forget that we're all in competition with each other, just think of it like we're all on the radio. There's room for everyone; there's room for stuff that sounds like Adele, for stuff that sounds like Kesha, for stuff that sounds like Blake Shelton.”

Indeed, so far Duets has been a very mixed bag of performer-types and sounds. The two heavy favorites from Season 1, Episode 3 were J Rome and John Glosson – one of whom has strength in R&B, while the other’s a gospel/country star in the making.

This is some sage wisdom coming from the lady who pretty much ushered in reality singing competition shows. Let’s hope the Duets amateurs are taking notes (especially her almost-axed partner Jason Farol)!
