We gotta admit, we were shaking our heads when American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen seemingly slammed his reality show alma mater while being filmed by TMZ.

At LAX last week, the singer was asked whether he tuned in for the Season 11 finale and what he made of recent ratings dip for the show. “I don’t know, man. Maybe it’s been on too long,” he said on video, sending the Idol world into a tizzy!

Now, Kris is clarifying the brief but incendiary comment.

Kris explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he never said the show should get the ax and called the story “the weirdest thing ever… It seems a little fabricated to be honest. It feels like they were putting words in my mouth but they do what they do.”

However you choose to construe his on-camera quip, Kris declares he’s got nothing but love for Idol.

“I’ve always been a huge fanatic about the show, and it’s done so many great things for me,” he said. “It’s given me amazing opportunities to make music, and I would never, ever, ever, ever say anything that would harm the show.”

That’s what we like to hear, Kris!
