Lazaro Arbos has had America’s heart since he revealed his emotional backstory in his initial American Idol 2013 audition. The Cuban-born but Miami-raised ice cream-scooper has had a stutter since he was six years old, but when he opens his mouth to sing, there is nary a sign of it.

The young man who has become as well known for the bright colors and bow ties he wears as his vocal tone has been very consistent, although none of his performances have blown the judges away, per se. And last week, he had his first real misstep in choosing Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway”. Although the shy singer has said Kelly is his favorite past Idol, Keith Urban said the song wasn’t in his wheelhouse. Randy Jackson pointed out that he was off-pitch (just say “pitchy,” Dawg!), while Mariah Carey didn’t feel the song got him to the midrange singing he is usually able to reach.

Lazaro’s initial audition was the most-watched of all the auditions this year on YouTube, and he has an extensive online following. All of these things will obviously help him, but he’ll need to step up performance-wise if he expects to outsing the girls in this competition.

So how did Lazaro Arbos do on the Season 12 Top 9 performance show? Will he make it through to the Top 8 after the elimination results on Thursday night? Watch Lazaro’s American Idol 2013 Top 9 performance video below and let us know what you think!
