Did American Idol 2013 finalist Lazaro Arbos just give the worst performance in the show’s long history on the Top 6 show tonight?
The American Idol performances show tonight for the Top 6 finalists was like a crazy roller coaster ride. The night saw amazing highs with stellar performances from nearly all the ladies, especially Kree Harrison and Candice Glover. However, it was also a night of terrible, cringe-worthy performances from the last guy left in the competition — Lazaro Arbos.
Somehow, despite having a track record of abysmal performances throughout the American Idol 2013 finals, Lazaro has not only managed to stay in the competition, he was actually voted into the Top 3 last week! His legions of fans love him for his moving backstory, his adorably cute face, or — for some of them who enjoy tweaking the judges and the producers — his absolute lack of musical skill.
On American Idol tonight, it was the latter quality of Lazaro Arbos most prominently on display. Both his performances were sad and so incredibly out of place among the terrific songs from the ladies of the Season 12 Top 6. The first song choice, however, was not just the most terrible of the night, it may have been the single worst performance of any finalist in the show’s twelve seasons.
Lazaro’s rendition of “(They Long To Be) Close To You” by Burt Bacharach, as sung by The Carpenters, was so bad the American Idol judges didn’t even seem to know how to critique it. After first saying he was “kind of speechless” — Randy Jackson pretty much said it was the worst performance on the show ever. Even Mariah Carey and Keith Urban, who have been called “nice” so often it should be tattood on their foreheads, can’t find anything good to say at all.
Nicki Minaj didn’t even bother to give a critique, saying: “Let’s just pretend I already gave my comment because we’re going to be here all night honey child.”
Let’s hope there is a doctor backstage waiting to treat that burn.
