UPDATE: A source tells Us Weekly that Mariah Carey is making a record payday for her turn on Idol. "Mariah is getting paid $18 million with a one-year option to do Idol, making her the highest paid judge on any music competition show," the insider says. Jennifer Lopez, by comparison, made $12 per year for her two seasons on Idol.
It’s one sweet day for American Idol fans! Never in our wildest fantasies did we think Mariah Carey would actually sign on to judge the singing competition.
According to a Fox press release, Mimi just inked a deal with Idol to become the show’s newest judge.
“As a singer, songwriter, and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol,” Mariah said.
The legendary diva previously guest mentored during Top 7 week on Season 7 of the show, which spotlighted tunes from her own songbook.
“We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show,” declared Idol creator Simon Fuller in the press release.
Mariah’s addition to the judging table follows quickly on the heels of news that both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler were leaving Idol to focus on personal projects. As one of the highest rated shows on Fox, Idol will certainly be a great platform for Mariah to promote her upcoming album. Her first single, “Triumphant,” is due out next month.
It’s probably been said before, but we’ll say it again: Mariah and Idol belong together.
